Sidi vertigos shift poorly and are too stiff to walk around in

I've been riding dirt in the same pair of 10" lace-up leather tanker boots for 10 years, over which time they have become glove soft at the flex points. With more street riding they are getting worn out quickly and the sole is almost gone. And they have no real protection aside from keeping my ankles from getting burned. Similar to these:

6 months ago I got some SIDI vertigo mega's to try a "real" moto boot. I ride SIDI's on my road bicycle so I am sold on the quality, and overall these are superbly constructed and snug and warm for long rides. But they still feel klunky. Compared to my old boots they feel fat and vague and never snug enough along my foot or ankle. I can do gearchange so much more precisely with my old boots, it scares me a little bit when I switch back to the SIDI's and I am fumbling with the upshifts. At least for the first mile or two. Also, with the SIDIs, I am walking around like I have hemmorhoids.

Maybe they're too big? I got the same size as the road shoes I wear, but in the wide size. A little room in the toes to wiggle but mainly they are too big in the ankle, space which gets taken up by my pants leg.

I am looking for a sporty, protective boot but one that I can walk around in - don't really like the rubber touring boots so I came up with these:

I tried on the Dainese Torque out - better fit in the ankle but they are also shit for walking around in. Looking for something that is sporty and comfy that doesn't look like a rubber rain boot?

I've been using my SIDI Vertigo's for a few years.

The first few uses it obviously felt stiff, but over time it broke in. Have you been using them often in the past 6 months?

I always wear them when I ride and they are the most comfortable foot wear I've used for riding!

Daytona's FTMFW! Best protection in the industry and comfy to walk around in. I just spent the afternoon walking around Capitola in them. Go see Helmut and he'll hook you up. :thumbup

You may have gotten the wrong size. If your feet slop around in them it will be difficult to break in.

takes a while to break em in. go on a 12 mile forced march

Mega's are EE and standard vertigos are D width. That is the main reason your boots do not feel correct. Your road cycling sidi shoe size will be the same size you buy for their motorcycle boots.

Dang, more than 2x what SIDIs cost. I wish I could go there...

Yeah usually I wear EE width which is why I went with megas. My SIDI road shoes are 11D so maybe I need 10.5EE. Anyone wear 10.5EE? I might sell my megas.

The one problem I had with my SV's were the thin insoles. Since you already have them try a good gel insole and see if they feel better.

Mine are a few years old so maybe they're better now :dunno

I have these and wear them every day on my commute, at work and at home. The only time I have issues is when I had to do a LOT of walking at a fast pace in SF. The reason I got these is they breath, are waterproof and have soles that can be replace as they are stitched on vice glued on. SIDI Canyons :)

Ah yes, forgot to mention this. I took out the insoles the boots originally came with and messed around with different variations. Right off the bat I bought the boots that fit snugly around my foot, so the amount of freeplay I had to use was pretty limited with different insoles. I wound up getting some thin gel ones that were much better than the originals, but still not much support. Better than nothing though-- they are boots after all!

cortech latigo air's are pretty comfy for walking, and reasonably protective...they also make a waterproof version.

I have walked miles in track boots.

Never again. If you want to walk in boots, get some sport touring boots. Don't expect a track boot to provide you with rigidity, and then complain when it is too stiff to walk in. I made that mistake. Now I've got a set of boots for each occasion, and I'm much happier to boot.

With motorcycle boots you get:

1) Protective
2) Comfortable to walk in
3) Inexpensive

Pick two.

+1
Daytona boots are excellent. :thumbup
Go see Helmut, try them and you'll see just how good they are.
I have the Road Stars w/o gortex.

More along the lines of a sport-touring boot than an all-out track boot, but give the Rev'it! Rival H2O boot a look. They are just as protective as the Sidi Vertigos, are very well made and very comfortable to walk in for miles (after they've broken in and you've replaced the awfully thin insole that it comes with). And they look fairly normal (as opposed to rubber rain boot, power ranger, etc/whatever).

I use mine primarily for commuting and light touring. I have a pair of Dainese TRQ-Race boots for spirited rides, since they are cut a bit more aggressively and offer more protection (via ankle brace). They suck for walking around in, which is why I picked up the Rev'it!s.

I have Sidi Veritgos and love them when I'm out for a real ride, but I agree they are not the best walking around boots. And they're wide already, so if you bought a Wide size, they're likely really big if your foot isn't an E width.

I recently bought a pair of Alpinestars sport touring boots to wear when I commute. Fit great and they are much easier to walk around in than the Sidis. Probably slightly less protective though.
