Going to lake end of June and thinking of a JetSki.

If I were to buy a new one, it would probably be a WaveRunner, but not sure which model, and they are a bit pricey anyway. The JetBlaster is $8.5k. Or maybe a different brand.

How about a 2000 GPR 1200?

1991 WaveRunner 650

2008 Sea-Doo RXT

Waverunner 2004 fx140

I'm just perusing FB

Yamaha 1.9L HO engine can get to ~67-69mph and no supercharger to maintain...

You called ctwo? I'm your Huckleberry...

What's your budget? How many people are riding with you? What are you towing with? How mechanical are you? Right off the bat: not the Honda and no to anything before 2000 at the minimum. No to the 650 Wave runner. The RXT is the longer hull ski. The RXP is more agile and fun. The RXT is more truck like. The 2008 RXP has one of the best hulls Seadoo built. The new hulls (2012+) are extremely fun too. They both need regular super charger rebuilds (every 100 hours or less). But, the Seadoo stuff is about the best on the water, minus the Kawi 310R/ ultra.

I think I can help out here....

This trip is with 4 families.

Other than just wanting one after renting for a half day a few years ago, the current plan is to be with my GF family. Her son bought a brand new Spark last year with a dual trailer. He's a paraplegic, so it would be good to have a second ski to go with him. That happened only a few years ago. The rest of the story is heavier...

A friend has a 1995 Kawi 900 sitdown apart - had a shop clean bad cylinder and install new piston, and a new top end kit is ready to go in. That's not going to happen in time, but might be good for my son to get off his ass. $1500 with trailer.

I just think that if it's only 30% more or so to buy a new one, then why not?

My budget depends more on what it is. I could spring for a new $20k ski or buy a throw away. I should probably just look for a throw away unit to put on that trailer and then forget about it.

Renting would require more than a week, they don't rent them on the lake so I'd have to get it from somewhere.

What state are you in? The Kawi 900Zxi's have issues with the (electric) trim motors. Make sure that works. Replace all fuel/ oil lines too if they're even Kinda old. Good hulls (repaint the Bottom if you can). Good power and speed for the $1500. A 2X ski trailer is worth $1K alone In decent shape. Still, 2-strokes are easy to work on. I don't trust the oil injection in those as well. I'd convert to premix. A 2024 Spark 900 (3-up) with a single ski trailer is about $5K wholesale, in good condition (used). New, they're in the $6-7K territory without trailer.

IMO, If the budget allows it, I'd buy a 2020+ RXP-X300. They're around 8-9K with a trailer. They're phenomenal.

+1
as a friend used to say, the rule of the 3 Fs. if it Floats, Flies, or...... it's cheaper to rent

that said, if you insist on buying be sure that the body of water you're planning to go to allows the boat you're buying. 2 strokes are totally or completely banned on some lakes. you also have to contend with the invasive species tag and qualifying to be allowed on some lakes is onerous... like you have to get the boat inspected then wait a month with the boat out of the water (berryessa is something like this), and then get certified again when you leave the water if you want to come back to that exact same lake. the tags are not necessarily transferable (assume they are not because... fiefdoms?)

renting locally gets you reasonable assurance that neither of those issues will be a weekend ruiner

The only problem with rental skis is they're the lowest of performance levels. Like pathetically low...but good advice on renting if infrequent.

I believe a professional hot water decontamination (AKA - Seafood Boil) 140°F for 10 seconds min Will make the 30 day requirement go away but there is additional cost because of this.
