We are real 4wheelers. And we can spot posers a mile away.

If your truck is going to stay on pavement - keep it stock height. No lift.
If you're going to lift it, do it right and make sure it gets a work out off road, grinding that fucker over boulders the size of couches.

Under 18 protected by law, over 65 protected by nature... everything in between is fair game. (Just don't let the HS principal see cruising the lot.)
 
I disagreee, 16.5" on 3/4 or 1T axles are the way to go.

Post a pic of your truck so we can compare credibility on this matter.
Heavier = not good, harder to drag over rocks.
Bigger rim = less rubber, harder to get grip on rocks.

On the axles, if you slap Dana60's on there, it's beefcake, but overkill for most folks. I highly doubt you outwheel 90% of all people out there.

Without speculating any more - Let's see your truck.

i'd go 16", easier to fit bigger calipers under the rim

16.5" tends to be silly stiff and heavy tires as they're usually heavy duty rated and limited selection compared to 15".

What's the purpose of this truck? We need to know that to guide you accordingly.

If it's a street roller - keep it low. Better milage and safer.
No sense in taking risks and losing money for the only purpose of "show off".
 
Holy crap, just went to that Pirate site. Taking away a few ideas for my own rig, been looking for inexpensive ways to modify my current ride as I know I'll be thrashing it up anyway.

Never could understand why people would want 5 - 6 inches of additional height, outside of the pen0r factor. Doesn't make much sense on the trail.
 
What's wrong with enjoying driving a tall vehicle? :confused That whole, "If you're not off-roading, you don't need a lift" statement is garbage. After all, if you don't race, you don't need a sportbike, right? :rolleyes What if you just want it? What if I want to buy an R1200GS-Adventure and commute to work with it? Sure, there's better, smaller choices, but I still say it's your money and you should spend it how you want.

Half the guys who are going to talk shit about your lifted Ram diesel have probably invested $10,000 into an 88 Toyota now worth $2500 and would LOVE to get their hands on a sweet new quad cab with 500lb-ft at 1200rpm ;)

Here's what's wrong with it:

#1: Gas milage drops.
#2: It's more likely to roll over.
#3: If you hit someone, you clear their bumper and cause more damage to the victim in front of you.
#4: Real men make fun of you. Even my wife would clown your ass. Pretty funny when she points and laughs at mall crawlers.

All that for what - to be a poser?

You need to get out more and meet some of these REAL people in the backcountry before you go making statements like that last one.

Though on another note, more power to someone who wants to invest money into their passion.

As for myself, I try to maintain a practical approach to a majority of my vehicles. My XJ's the workhorse rig (Dump runs, grocery pick up, so on and so forth) thats also taken onto some pretty gnarly technical trails on Fort Hunter Liggett (Mostly the tank trails, got permission from the CO to muck about on them for half a day, totally awesome.) In the end junkyards have become my friend, rat fucking tons of vehicles just so I can get mine running again seems to be the story of my XJ's life.
