I ride the Bay Bridge everyday, today I saw a very close call. Nearly a bike to bike collision, the bike splitting lanes in front of me between 1 and 2 was nearly taken out by a dude that I saw go directly from between 2 and 3...to the lane we were in... like no other motorcycles are on the road. This ticks me off in a huge way, maybe rooks idk. Bikes need to watch for bikes, not just cars. Any opinions? The other thing I see a lot is bikes splitting different lanes cause cars to abruptly move over (being curtious) and squeezing a bike that is riding in the appropriate lane.

Expect the unexpected. Oh, and the expected. So in other words, expect anything and everything.

And a reminder to everyone out there to watch your six.

What's the appropriate lane? Don't fall into the "I have to be in this lane" mentality... it'll get you squished. Think more of "where is it safest lane for me to be without endangering anyone else?"

bluenoser's post +1

I too have had riders come on to the freeway, and make their way quickly over and veer into splitting without so much as a glance to check that their were no bikes coming.

Check the gap folks!

And, yeah it is irritating when bikes start splitting all over the place. This can happen from some dumbass splitting and not watching his six, causing other riders to have to find their way around his/her selfish ass.

But, I have seen many groups riding together and doing this through all lanes, which is just beyond stupid imo. Hate to say this as I usually don't pick on Harleys, but for some reason it seems to usually be loudass Harleys I see doing this. With all the noise and revving, it pisses people off, makes them drive like they have lost their minds, and generally causes an general ruckus.
I saw this many times going west up to the Caldecott Tunnel while caging. People see some loud revver coming up on the left, so they try to move right a bit, only to squeeze some dipshit in a skull face mask coming on the right, who then proceeds to get mad and gesticulate and be macho and rev his shit like crazy and kick their car and whatnot.

I always think to myself "well, you are dumb motherfucker."

I did that yesterday on my way back from Infineon - got into the 1-2 gap without looking. Brain fart on my part as I was pretty exhausted. Thankfully there was noone there when I checked my mirrors after the fact. Lesson learned - don't ride when you're not all there.

I don't understand how this could disrupt a bike riding in his own lane.
The car isn't going to cross the brail bumps. If they do, then they are really messed up.

There's no official lane that you should share inbetween. Most do it between 1 & 2, but there's nothing saying that you have to.... just tends to be the safest place to do such a task :dunno

Checking for other bikes behind you when cutting into a lane to split is one of the most difficult things you can do on a motorcycle. I just give riders trying to merge in front of me the right of way because they may not see me, even if they looked. I hope you all do the same

some dickhead wearing shorts/sneakers on an R6 did that to me today. I was b/t 1 and 2. I check my mirrors every 15sec. he did not wait and just passed me using 2/3 and cut back over.

Why was he a dickhead?

Anyone that doesn't do everything just like I would is a dickhead. :x (It's unspoken rule of the road!) :twofinger

exactly. riding in shorts and sneakers like you have to hurry home to take a dump....you won't get any from me.

cars in #2 started hugging my side of the lane to make way for him so now I get the squeeze.

Well Spoken :thumbup

Now for everyone that is offended by the actions of others, no matter what they drive or ride...Sack it up, pay attention, see it coming, let it go....the world doesn't revolve around you.

You can deal with everything....If You don't give a big rats ass, about how incompetent everyone else is...and how awesome you are :laughing

my biggest pet peeve…when slow asses don't check their six when in the split…and i am forced to move to the 2-3 split to pass their slow ass then back to the 1-2. i will follow for a couple miles before i get all macho and make the pass. really folks, ain't that hard to check your mirrors and be courteous. move the fawk over…thank you very much.

I've only been splitting if traffic goes under 30 MPH, but usually if it's closer to 20 mph. If I notice a rider splitting behind me I will always move over because I recognize for California I am very "slow" splitter...

This is my 3rd or 4th week commuting from SF to Foster City, and regardless of what lane or how fast I ride, I find I am passed by everything 2 wheeled....75 MPH in left lane, light traffic? Someone on a sports bike will come blasting by me at 90. 65 mph slightly dense traffic? I'll be blown away by a guy on a Harley lane splitting with massive hard bags @ 80 mph. Hell I think some guy on a CB250 passed me lane splitting at 50 mph.

I am just not in a rush to risk my life for a 20 mile / sub 30 minute commute....over time as my skills improve and higher speeds feel slower, I can split at higher speeds, but not yet...also I don't think I'd even want to split at 40+ MPH.

Depends on the situation. I check when it's safe. I don't rail through cars anymore. So, if someone is 'stuck' behind me for a bit, fuck them.
