Never ID's or busted. The Ghostrider dude did the same thing 15 years later.

Had a CMSP meeting today. A couple things jumped out at me. The CHP are being very proactive in cataloging safety statistics.
Typically it takes up to two years on SWITTERS getting them out and the CHP is data mining information to bring it out faster.

That is a good thing.

This jumped out for me. Preliminary November info

Pretty amazing % on unlicensed riders and also Training, The Training could include OG's that never had to do it.

General stuff:
1. Registrations continue to slide on a downward trend. Slowly.
Some of this is likely due to registration costs and people non-opping to save $$ and older riders saying good-bye to riding.

2. Licensed riders are down. Slowly
Thinking this is # of students attending the program while others are aging out of riding.

3. In '87 there were 54K students This year it might get to 40K.
I think this is a general fade in the sport attracting new riders.

4. Deaths are down by 75 so far compared to last year. This is a good thing. In 2021 and 22 they were well into the 600's
At just over 500 it is still a lot of our fellow riders dying :(

5. Serious crashes remain the same roughly. More people wearing gear?? :dunno

6. One Training instructor was hit and killed this year. Total Control is upping their game in notifying students of their responsibility of taking the course.
There was one other fairly serious injury as well.

7. A motorcycle upgrade is being pursued from feedback from students. Does not mean all new, more like making sure they look OK and provide a more confident inspiring piece of hardware.

8. Women riders have a higher fail rate and they are trying to address that.

Media Stuff.
1. The media folks came on late last year and their contract goes through '27.
2. The TV add I shared before was fairly successful with a 3% click through rate on Google TV / YouGube. They are tweaking it to make some shorter versions for other platforms. There was over 3M views. The target age group was 20-40yo and Statewide.
3. Adding more women to the ads was discussed. That addresses a concern with the video I shared.
4. They are optimizing regional views this year and they may have specific time frames with those for large events sort of thing.
5. They are going to expand the age group being targeted to include OG's. Good!
6. Facebook / IG and also Snapchat are platforms being added in '26.
7. 50K people clicked through to the CMSP website. https://motorcyclesafetyca.com/ The website will be refined to match up better with the media campaign. 2.3K signed up for a course.

CHP
Attend more events. Some that are not motorcycle specific. Car shows kind of thing.

#6 Can you expand on the "serious injury"? Did this happen during a training course?

#7 is not going to be easy to address. Most training facilities simply do not have the $ to spend on newer motorcycles.

It was during a course, but they did not provide specifics.

I think the direction was make sure they are washed and don't look like shit vs. they need to look new.

ABATE is working on some legislation that will affect the program, but it is too early to let that cat out of the bag.
I will just say it is a positive in my mind.

Good summary, thank Bud.

If the state of CA wants to decrease the % of unlicensed riders, they have an opportunity to use their first contact resources (LEO's) with the unlicensed rider to pass promotional material to them at the traffic stops.

Sportbike ownership is down across the state WRT to track environments. Sales are still sluggish. The female rider wave never materialized much from the mid 2015's onward WRT to sport bikes. In California, growth on used equipment is coming from hispanic riders, what little growth there is. The HD markets are still relatively strong, but losing ground as well. Indian can't find traction anywhere it seems, which is a shame. I've been told through a solid source at a large national wholesale/ retailer that moto and side-by-side have solid demand. Other segments do not.

While I think that is a good idea in general IMO the application will not work. All actions now have to meet a fair and equitable standard. If they open that door then other requests to distribute info would like jump in line.

It took an act of GOD to get the CHP to address lane splitting crash reports for the Berkeley study.

Equality over effectiveness wins again, stymying rider education.

I have failed at three proposals with the CA moto safety committee. The new way of business includes way to much justification that is equitable and good for all.

Stymying for sure. I have given up.

Thanks.

To expand it was hard before but we had a mentor from the DOT that would help make sure it was well done per Steering Committee standard.

First step headed up the food chain.

I got a few done with his help.

He retired and they adjusted the standard to be more in line with the new world standard that from what I understand all State actions now need to address.

I tried a few and failed.
Not even close.

ctwo posted this in the Genz thread. Likely not a lot of people are looking at that so sharing here.

Enlightening and disturbing.

The data on NPA is cherry picked; they only used one month and didn't disclose the average CR (condition rating) which will dramatically affect the Price/book value. They must know they did this so there must be some number culling to back their conclusions. I watched an HD auction this AM in Texas (NPA) and prices looked firm. It was surprising.
