Starbucks finally pushing back on freeloaders using them as a cheap office.

but honestly have no issue with drinking the Folgers drip coffee we have at work. I'm not sure I understand what all the Folgers hate is all about.

I dated an heir to the Folgers Coffee fortune for a bit while I was in high school.
I had no idea how much that break-up cost me until much later in my life. :laughing

i had the inverse experience. went ass over tea kettle for a beautiful boy in high school. seemingly aimless with zero prospects. married him. found out later he was a fucking genius at a ridiculously marketable and lucrative skill.

WRT the subject - am a tea drinker (and brew my own), so no clue about starbucks or folgers lol.

You avoided a lifetime of shit coffee. :laughing

Jules: Mmmm! Goddamn, Jimmie! This is some serious gourmet shit! Usually, me and Vince would be happy with some freeze-dried Taster's Choice right, but he springs this serious GOURMET shit on us! What flavor is this?

Jimmie: Knock it off, Julie.

Jules: [pause] What?

Jimmie: I don't need you to tell me how fucking good my coffee is, okay? I'm the one who buys it. I know how good it is. When Bonnie goes shopping she buys SHIT. I buy the gourmet expensive stuff because when I drink it I want to taste it. But you know what's on my mind right now? It AIN'T the coffee in my kitchen..

Encouraging turnover is all the reason they need.

Reducing loitering and vagrancy is an added benefit.

Did this Bay Area TikTok-er solve Starbucks' power outlet-covering mystery?

I'm sure there will be a lot of whining, wailing, bitching and moaning but they really have no ground (aside from self-serving) to bitch about this.

I know of plenty of people who never got an office but went to Starbucks, took up an entire table for hours on end, used the free internet, used the free power and often only got one coffee while there. Great thing while it lasted but probably costed Starbucks plenty.

I'm sure there will be a few on here who push back against my perspective. :laughing

What are people's thoughts? Okay with Starbucks moves or don't like it?
Starbucks grew into the massive chain it is now in large part because they made the stores nice and inviting places to hang out, get work done, whatever. It is, or maybe was, a big part of their business model. A lot of people talk about the folks who buy one coffee and stay for hours, but there are also folks who stay for hours, buy a coffee or snack about every hour, even bring in for informal meetings, who also tend to buy coffee.

They have every right to change business model to try to get people in and out quickly like other fast food places, of course. Whether that will be good for them, I guess we will find out. If they are too aggressive at making their stores worse places to hang out I think it will hurt more than help, but if it's limited to fewer electrical outlets I think most people won't notice or care much.

They are not really losing money on the power suck as it costs about 3 cents to operate a laptop for 6-8 hours. Hard to see that a "camper" has much expense beyond that.

No, but they are losing money on people walking away from a crowded store. I picked my son up from school about an hour ago, Monday and Wednesday he has a split schedule because of auto shop. We went to In&Out. The drive through was packed. We went inside. The line inside was just as deep and there was nowhere to sit. We left. That’s what they’re trying to avoid.

The question is, is it Starbucks and McDonalds duty to provide public restrooms for people? And specifically for people who pretty much destroy them? Is it the responsibility of Starbucks employees to deal with these people, many with real problems that even professionals would have a challenge to work with

We actually need to, as a society, to start to answer this cause the problem is only growing?

+1

And to follow to the next conclusion, *only* Starbucks? Should 7-11 also have to open up its restrooms? The local pho spot? Is it business' collective responsibility to provide (ideal case) washroom/pseudo-showers for all?

I worked at Starbucks in college, and there would be the uncommon but not rare occasion a homeless person would tie up a restroom for 20-30 minutes to pee/poop, and also use a bajillion paper towels/water/copious amounts of hand soap to wash themselves. Which I understand, sure, no one wants to stink if they can help it and sanitation wards off sickness but I did not particularly enjoy having to mop the floor and restock the everything after he bathed himself.

I never understood Star$ at all.

The line is enormous, the coffee is so-so, :x way too many choice permutations, the line moves too slowly, why is every effing customer such a special snowflake??? Why can't decide what they want while they stand in line for 20 minutes, :wow do they REALLY HAVE to discuss it with the bar-fucking-reesta first :( - is the line even moving, :mad why has the server wandered off again, jeeeezus fucking christ will they get a move on :mad:mad:mad:mad:mad

But then I'm way more chill once I have my first cup :gsxrgrl :party

Ok, I have a cool story bro… around the turn of the century I was staying in the boss’s penthouse apartment on Friedrichstrasse in Berlin. It had it’s own elevator… it was pretty bitchin. My wife was working for a start up, I was on vacation. Bitchin, eh?

Anyhow, there was an “Einstein” coffee shop on the bottom floor where the elevator was. More than once I would leave in the morning to go explore some bitchin stuff and return in the afternoon to see the same folks at the same tables.

These freeloaders are everywhere!

have said previously that i am a tea person. but had an awesome morning today. after a deliriously restful sleep last night, woke up to the smell of coffee wafting through the house. knew my babe was in the kitchen - morning regimen. smiled and rolled over to go back to sleep. was unaware that our little girl rose had apparently heard my rustling, come into our room and was soon on the bed. snuggles ensued. the scent of coffee, a bit of sunshine through the blinds, a warm bed, and cuddling with rose. it just doesn’t get any better than that. :)

I don’t do Starbucks. However the best part of waking up is Barefoot in my cup. I wish I could find that Wave Moto guy.

I love it when the place is crowded and noisy, and the person who puts the drinks out for pick up calls out the person's name in a low voice with eyes cast downwards and walks off.
Then 5 people walk up and handle all the cups searching for their name.

In Joberg I had to ask the Starbucks for the password and he'd write it down on a slip of paper...not very efficient.

Clearly people hanging out there on their laptops. Most places in Joberg have wifi but it's locked and you just ask the waiter.
