Stolen - 2013 DRZ400S

I'd get someone to check out your forks to make sure they're not bent. Usually they kick the bars to break the steering lock, which can result in some significant damage.

Glad to hear you got it back. Do you have reasonable insurance coverage on it? It might be cheaper than you'd expect, comp only added $34/year for my WR.
 
$263 in "administration fees"? What the fuck are they doing that it costs that much to do the paperwork for a tow? :wtf

It's mostly as an extra punishment and way for the city to make money when cars get towed.
 
The most vital information to this happy ending is: where did they recover it from? did you even ask?

Would help us in case another theft occurs as a possible lead . .
 
The bike is insured, and the insurance will cover all costs minus the $1000 deductible. They said it's not going to go up since I'm not at fault, but I suspect that the $1000 will cover pretty much all the costs, so the insurance wasn't a real win here. I'm definitely bringing it to a mechanic because I need a new ignition switch and will see whether it's possible to fix the steering lock.

The bike was taken from Moultrie @ Crescent and was recovered a week later about a mile away at Florida @ Cesar Chavez. I don't know how they found it, it could be that it was not parked properly, or maybe someone noticed the removed ignition switch and the wires hanging out for hotwiring.
 
It may not add much to the cost to drop your deductible to $500. Dual sports seem absurdly cheap to insure for comprehensive.
 
I keep saying, there is a huge inherent flaw in the DRZ which makes it very easy to steal. I can walk up to a drz, start it with a key, and ride off in about 30-seconds.
 
They are also small/light enough for one strong person or two normal people to pick up and put into a van/truck.

I remember my KTM 625SMC was similar, the ignition switch was extremely simple to bypass. Then again, better than the no ignition switch at all on my WR...

There is nothing to bypass on the DRZ. Nothing to cut, nothing to jump. Just a simple unplug of an OEM connector.
 
The same is true on the KTM I had. You could easily carry a switch that you have a key for, or just make a jumper to plug in where the ignition switch plugs in. The plug was right behind the headlight, accessible by removing the rubber straps.

Out of curiosity, did you have locks on the bike to prevent it being rolled away, and if so was there evidence of how the thieves may have defeated it/them?

I reckon it won't stop a professional, but then again a professional would probably not steal a dinged up DRZ.

As far as the insurance goes, they want me to fill out endless forms basically handing the bike over to them for inspection, and then they decide whether it's considered "totaled" or not, and I'll probably have to pay the cost of the inspection too. Since I don't want that, and the cost to fix it is likely under $1000, I think I'll do it without insurance, and I'm considering cancelling comprehensive and just keeping liability.
 
I think they ought to cover tow costs associated with theft if you have comprehensive. I suspect that, including labor, repair costs will be significant.

Yes, they do cover tow costs (which were about $300). But I usually work on my bike myself, and I don't think that a new ignition switch and windshield cost $700, which would be needed to put me over the $1000 deductible.
 
They will cover the labor involved in replacing the parts. You can then pocket that and DIY.

I would expect there to be damage to something other than the ignition switch, seeing as they broke the steering lock. Take a good look at everything, figure out what parts cost on bikebandit, and then figure at least an hour of labor and likely 2 hours. Look at everything with a scratch on it (that's from this).
