Strat's OR BDR Ride Report

no, seriously--I'd heard the OR BDR was tough--so it was kind of off my list of things to try by myself, and that was just confirmed by hearing about you guys dropping your adv bikes in various places along the way.

I'm your huckleberry :teeth

Enjoyed the report! Thanks for all the cool stories and pics!

I personally would not ride the OR BDR solo. But that's just me.

Yes, the new OR BDR was kinda scary to me before hearing about your trip, with the difficulty I'd heard about, plus from a solo standpoint how remote it is and then heat issues. riding alone is always foolish, too. :facepalm:clown

:thumbup

thinking about trying to make an appearance at the End of Pavement Rally (August 11-13, 2023) this year ...

would be close to OR BDR secs 1 and 2, I guess, and maybe try to find Hart Mtn hot springs.

maybe Mr stratslinger77 and his crew are looking at EoP this year, too? :ride

Then don't try Usal Road...lost coast.

Very fun adventure report!
I enjoyed it.

SFMCjohn (and Cabrito), I'd join you guys for a ride up (or down) the ORBDR.

Having lived in the Silverton OR area for like 17 years I (almost) always enjoy getting back up there. Another reason I enjoyed this RR.

I love the way that you have the bike strapped to the tree as an ad hoc lift for the front of the bike. That's very clever, something to stick in back corner of my head Just In Case.

We picked up the tip on this video and it worked out really well.

Excellent Ride Report!! :party

Lots of pics & descriptions.

Too bad that Fluffy wasn't doing well on the ride, glad he got home safely. :thumbup

Awesome report and, having just gotten back from doing the ORBDR on light (and lightly loaded) dual sports, hats off to you for doing it on ADV bikes. There were many sections (like the bypass on day 1) that had me wondering how the big bike riders were feeling about all those rocks.

I really need a 690/701 in my life for rides like this...:laughing

I think a few folks were thinking that. I talked to a guy in Xmas valley who was soloing the ride on hi 1090 adventure and he was eyeing the DRZ a bit

Oh wow, I'm always late to the party!:laughing

It's been a few days since I found and blew through this thread...

I am horrible with sand. Horrible, I tell ya.

And I made two bad, bad assumptions:
a) It will get better as we go north / get past the southern few sections. Nope. To me it just kept getting worse. More and more areas of soft; sand getting replaced with silt/moondust.
b) I'll probably have one, if not both, of my copilots in the back with me, suffering just as badly. Nope. I was the odd man out for sure, trying to keep up with Maverick and Goose.

No sand skills, always in the back, holding everyone up, eating dust and trying not to just hate life.

I was on the 660. All the 701 would have done for me is be slightly less painful to keep picking up over and over. Every time the bike hit the ground I was wondering if this one was where something would break that's backordered until December. As it is the tower bolts that I ordered are supposed to arrive end of August *eyeroll*.

There was no way I was going to stand up (on purpose) when I was having so much trouble while I was sitting down where I "had the most control" (I know, I know); that just means I fall further. So it was purely by accident that I came out of a rocky section and into a sandy section before I could sit down, and I was all "Oh crap I think I just did it!" And that discovery did make most of the rest of that day slightly more tolerable, but then I was still slow, still last, and still crashed yet again.

Once I hurt my knee, I was done. I was tired of (feeling like I was) holding the two Awesomes back, tired of picking up the bike, tired of the frustration. So I bailed in hopes of letting them enjoy what was left of the trip.

That's about it, really.

I did get a KipMoto trailer, but I have yet to register it, and it would be more for, say, loading up a bunch of crap to haul to Stonybarf, or using it to take a bunch of crap to see my friends in Eugene (where I have to be around other people and pretend to be human and clean, not in my wool spidey suit for a week without a shower). I don't see myself every actually riding anything fun with it attached, and most certainly not anything even close to the ORDBR stuffs that are burned into my nightmares...

:ride

Nice write-up! I just got back from an Oregon run solo on my 790 ADV R. I wasn't interested in the Hot AF dry desert sections this time of year so I ran along the coastal ranges all the way to Tillamook riding an amazing mix of forest rds and logging rds, and excellent twisties, I barley needed to even touch 101, just making it up along the way and camping wherever in the woods. From Tillamook I headed east and got new tires in The Dalles just East of Hood River. Great shop there with the same set-up you ran for MSRP. I Pulled my wheels in the parking lot and they threw em on for a very reasonable cost. I personally loved the sandy section getting into Sisters but then again I grew up riding in the desert. I could see that being a big handful if you don't know sand. Did you guys skip the super rocky stuff between Ollolie Lake and Detroit?
