I'm planning to mod my bandit S for a new look for this summer.. I have a smaller fairing (needs paint) at hand and I'm trying to figure out how to mount it *before* I tear the stock fairing away:

1) Based on some background research, the gauge cluster needs the bracket from a naked bandit - is this true and/or is it easy to manufacture one by yourself? ATM I could not find any at ebay for sale so I'm leaning towards a trip to a hardware store...

2) Same thing for the generic fairing mounting hardware. Any suggestions?

3) Other things to consider?

If this is a FAQ, please give me a link instead of the usual "use search" reply.. :p

Thanks!

You can make pretty much any mounting stuff with stuff from Home Depot, though buying it factory is much easier.
If I may ask, when you remove your fairing, could I borrow it for a mock-up? I am trying to retro-fit a front fairing on my bike.

I have a brand new $500 front fairing for that bike if you're interested. I was going to put it on my bike but I'm lazy and it's selling. I forget the brand.. but it's the touring fairing, it's a tad wider than the hand grips.

Sure, as long as I get it back in one piece at some point. This project may take a while though since the painter guy seems to be very busy...

If I decide to go Home Depot way, I'd like to see if someone has done this already. I don't want to make same mistakes someone has already done again.. ;)

Hardware store it was. See the results.

Hmmmmm...... Looks like the new headlight / fairing is mounted a bit too low.

And on top of that :bigbarf

maybe it'll look better after its color matched

I thought about the color matching and will make my final decision later, but for now, the black/red scheme is kind of nice. About fairing being low.. There was no room (ok, maybe 1/2") to get it higher, but I want the chrome from gauges to show - it adds some character to the whole thing. Anyway, I have to revise the mounting a bit by adding some dampening/support for the gauges. Now they jump around like a maniac on freeway due to the rubber bushings I used. Otherwise everything worked out surprisingly well. I even crafted a lower support (gasp) since the fairing bounced under negative G's... O:)

Not gonna lie dude, but I think the thing looks hideous. There are some nice-looking aftermarket headlights out there, but that is not one of them. Acerbis makes some decent ones.

you mounted it way too low

if you RAISED IT, up by about 4"-6" it would probably look a little better, and would do a better job of keeping you out of the airstream.

and "there's ALWAYS more room",...YOU have to make it on custom fab's.

Mmm.. I like the airstream. If I didn't, I'd kept the old fairing. However I have to adjust the lights, so same time I can check it out how it would look if I raised it few inches. Let's see.

just do a photoshop cut/paste,..(I cant here at work),..and you'll see,.....

I personally thought it would look kick ass if it was higher, and closer to the forks,....now it's going to cover your gauges if it's that high, but it'll also give you something to steady them against, since you mentioned that they were a tad wiggly after your mod.

also not trying to "sell" you anything,..but that would look killer with a tiny windscreen,...lemme know if you want me to make you a mini polycarb windscreen for that bikini fairing (I make custom windscreens all the time)

good idea I think, your just at stage one of the "cosmetic prototyping",..keep going,......:thumbup

*OT*

I have an almost new Holeshot pipe and jet kit for sale and a Busa rear shock.

I think it looks cool :thumbup

I tweaked it a bit in the morning and got it higher - the gauges are at better position that way (select/reset buttons are easier to find), but I need to bring it closer to forks now. I.e. drill new holes etc... I got the wiggly meter issue fixed by adding some weather stripping and squeezing the cluster against the fairing. And cracked the other support a bit in the process. No wonder the fairing was so cheap.. :-D Anyways. It seems that this one will be a mock up for the real fairing later on unless mr Superglue comes into rescue. More later.

MSFIT: Where did you find that? URL? This stuff seems to be somewhat hard to find here. Luckily I speak german, so with some patience it's not a big deal to get it shipped from ol' good Europe.. :)
