STURGIS, S.D. (AP) — The South Dakota Highway Patrol says nine people died at the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, which officially ended on Sunday.

The Patrol says eight people died in fatal accidents, including an Oakes, N.D., woman who was killed Friday when her motorcycle struck a pickup truck driven by a Colorado man.

Authorities say the victim, 43-year-old Sheila Coleman, was not wearing a helmet.

The Patrol says 50 people were injured in accidents during the rally, down from 80 last year.

Statistics released Sunday show that 251 people were arrested for driving drunk during the event, up from 235 last year. Misdemeanor drug arrests were up from 149 to 185. Felony drug arrests were down from 43 last year to 34 this year.

Preliminary reports show that traffic numbers were up over 2011

I cannot find any numbers to compare to Laguna Seca if anyone has them?

Some numbers up, some down. Meh. :dunno

Have you been to Sturgis, Scottie? It's HUGE. Considering those numbers and the average turn out, I'd say it wasn't all that bad. Sucks that nine folks had to check out, though. :rip

Imagine the death toll if it were held at a location with lots of twisty, technical roads...

Never been. They'd probably hang me and my "rice rocket" ducati. As my harley friends call it...:ride

Now I'm curious as to how many people participate in Stugis... just to get some perspective on the death toll

This (2011) year's rally was attended by 416,727 people, which is a negative difference of 50,042 people.

...

This year's garbage haul was 511.79 tons, down by 12.24 percent. There were 727 vendor licenses issued, down from 761 last year. The DOT counted 415,367 vehicles throughout the Black Hills, down from 459,968 from the year before. Mt. Rushmore saw 55,556 visitors this year, compared to 67,130 last year. Finally, the state collected $411,466 in state sales tax, collected through Sept. 30, down by 9.96 percent over 2010.

A few hundred thou IIRC. A gathering of that many sober sportbike riders would result in a much higher death toll IMHO.

I rode a Triumph there. It was "ricey" according to some. I lived. There were plenty of non-American bikes. :dunno

Last year was 416,727.

From the CDC for 2010:
Number of deaths: 2,465,932
Death rate: 798.7 deaths per 100,000 population

Rally attendance estimates for that year were between 450k and 600k, so we'll call it 525k.

In 2010 there were 14 deaths at the rally.

798.7 (deaths per 100k) x 5.25 (100k attendees) = 4193.18 (estimated annual deaths for 525k people)

The rally is one week, so 4193.18 / 52 (weeks per year) = 80.64 (deaths in a population of 525k in one week)

So, we can say that attending Sturgis makes you 5.8 times LESS likely to die. :party

Were you quoting motorcycle statistics?

How about this: Laguna Seca MotoGP attendance: 135k. Deaths this year: zero.

For the whole State of California there are about 1.2 motorcycle fatalities per day.

For the week of Sturgis to match the Statewide figure on a daily basis is crazy.

Population weighting spoils the joke. :twofinger

As a fellow nerd: :thumbup

Seriously, as Jason pointed out, it's amazing that only 9 people died. For those making comments about sportbikers actually riding their bikes, you should probably check to see how many people ride in for Sturgis from VERY far away. How many sportbikers ride their bikes to Laguna from more than even 1000 miles away? Very few....
