Suggestions for next purchase

Mulities are great bikes, but that's a lot of weight to haul around.

I have a R1200RT and it's a great bike, but it's a tourer not a traffic splitting light weight. For you I like the R1200R (2011 or newer) they are really nice bikes and will do everything you want. BMW offers free test rides, if you try one, you'll most likely want one. It's is a spendy bike though.

I love my ninja 1000. Most comfortable sportbike I've ever sat on and you can bolt on some givi side cases or a top case. Gobs of torque everwhere, enough that I can put around in 4th at 1500 rpms and pull away smoothly. I bought it originally to be a commuter/sport tourer but the damn thing is still fun as hell in the twisties, though I still prefer the 250 for that :thumbup

I think I might prefer the K1200R. I'm not a huge fan of the boxer engines. The R1200ST does look pretty good though.

The R12000ST hasn't been made in years, but it is a niche bike the fits between the R and the RT with a slant more towards the R. If you don't like the boxer engine, it'd bet you've never owned one. Nothing wrong with that.

You're right, I've never owned one. And I wouldn't dismiss the bike just because I liked something different before. I'm actually going to be talking to a guy tomorrow about one. I'll see how it goes.

I really appreciate all the input guys. I'll keep checking the thread for more.

So far the strongest contenders are:

BMW R1200ST

BMW K1200R Sport

Suzuki SV1000S

And of course, Aprilia Tuono
 
that said tho, every bike does have their set of potential problems.

No kidding. My SV650 threw a rod at less than 15k miles on the engine.

it's redonkulous, and bigger, but once u get it moving, it's very agile. watching police motorcycle competitions makes me want one

Me too. Although I like the ST better, I think.
 
R1200RT, nimble as hell while being surprisingly easy to ride hard... despite the look. Excellent wind protection. And you can get close to 50 MPG if not a bit over... out of a 6-gallon+ tank. 2 low beams and 1 high beam, awesome for riding all day/night (heated grips and seats, yes both front and back). Side cases are standard and lockable with the ignition key.

K1200R is great, loved mine, wish I could keep it. K1200R-Sport... the rare one with better wind protection. Another surprisingly easy bike to bike. Insanely stable, crazy powerful brakes for the size, and powerful all throughout the RPM. Mine was my second bike after about 15K on an SV650S. Yet, I survived with no drops/not a single scratch on the bike (22K miles).

I must've missed you dismissing the F800ST. I rode it up North, Point Reyes Station, Light House, Marin Cheese Factory. A light and nimble bike, I was able to keep up with friends on bigger and faster bikes... had a blast and the bike did 62 MPG average for the trip.

I'm not biased on BMW, I just happen to have ridden several of them a lot. :)

Almost forgot... on Triumph side... the Sprint ST is a good consideration if you want something a bit on the sporty side. Think of it as a lighter version of the BMW K1300S (faired version of the K1200R/Sport). The upper seating position is a bit relaxed, but your lower part would feel like you're on a sportbike. It's easy to weigh the peg and just lean the bike. The newer version the GT comes with the side cases I believe. Many of the latter versions of the ST's are too.

Ninja 1000 FTW. If you sit on it, you will be sold.
 
Multi 1200. I would say Tuono V4R, but you said commute and they run really hot in traffic.

EDIT: Actually, while the Multi is good commuter, I don't think it would be great in dense city traffic, due to both the wide bars and the high center of gravity, which makes it a bit more tippy than most bikes.

I've been told that the BMW K1200 has such extreme power that it can be difficult to manage. I don't envision that being a problem, but does anyone have any insight into this?

I'm mostly down to a BMW K or R 1200.

I've decided lane splitting in dense traffic is not so important, as long as I can still do it on the highway.
