Suzuki leaving MotoGP at the end of 2022

Suzuki has a contract with Dorna to compete in GP through 2026. So it could get very expensive for them to pull out entirely.

Some post war Japanese were passionate racers whereas others were in for the cooperate image...

Soichiro Honda was a mechanical engineer with a passion for motorcycles and racing.

Torakusu Yamaha passion was musical instruments...

Michio Suzuki was a carpenter who's passion was pedal-driven wooden looms...

Shozo Kawasaki initial passion was western type ocean going steel ships...

The bean counters have probably already done the maths and determined that is still more cost effective to pay the penalty vs continue to budget approx 30mil/year to fulfill the contract.

I am hopeful for an Aprilia satellite team; which then hires the Suzuki employees and gets moar Aprilia on the grid.

I has solution. Kawasaki and Suzuki join budgets and race a Kawazuki.

Yup.

I like the speculation of RNF to be the satellite Aprilia team (and VR46 to run satellite M1s).

Not likely. Global recession will be much worse than 2008/9. Expect one or two more manufacturers to pack it in.

Devastating.

And here I had just started to care about watching MotoGP again on account of Suzuki doing well as an underdog.

Suzuki will absolutely sell their grid spot to someone. Maybe they'll give it to Dorna for a discount on penalty fees and Dorna will give it to another team.

I think a Satellite Ape is the best option to replace Suz. Satellite Duc's would probably perform the best right away, but there are plenty there already. We don't need any more backmarker Yamahas or KTMs. And there's no way Honda would support a new team enough to be competitive.

The worst possible option is probably keeping the current Suzuki's around without factory support. Without consistent factory development, a "factory" bike gets slower and slower each year. Whatever privateer Suzuki team would be dead last by the end of the next year and will promptly pull out of GP. A private team without a factory is not a sustainable approach in GP with the current regulations.

6 factories was nice while we had it. But Suz never fully committed, never had a Sat team and never built a farm system. IMO - GP won't be noticeable worse with only 5 factories, especially given that each of them can win.

It's sad to see them go. But the writing is on the wall. They are the smallest team, with the fewest motorcycles on the grid.

And the global recession is just starting to hit and I would be really surprised if we didn't lose more MotoGP teams.

I'm guessing this is going to be related to Suzuki

I don't believe you've fully told us how you really feel about Suzuki. :laughing

Official announcement from Suzuki is here.

SUZUKI ANNOUNCEMENT

Team Suzuki Press Office – May 12.

Suzuki Motor Corporation is in discussions with Dorna regarding the possibility of ending its participation in MotoGP at the end of 2022.

Unfortunately, the current economical situation and the need to concentrate its effort on the big changes that the Automotive world is facing in these years, are forcing Suzuki to shift costs and human resources to develop new technologies.

We would like to express our deepest gratitude to our Suzuki Ecstar Team, to all those who have supported Suzuki's motorcycle racing activities for many years and to all Suzuki fans who have given us their enthusiastic support.

BrotoGP stops doing podcasts
- Valentino Rossi retires
- Suzuki leaves MotoGP

I see an unsettling pattern.
