I feel that this is the OP i've ever read here. That's says something. Also the Melbourne race was great.

donno about you guys, but the big front wings look fugly with the tiny rear wings. they should split the difference or something. ugh!

didn't anyone notice they are back to slicks? Cool. Yes it was the best race in a long time. Nice to see a battle for the lead & other positions coming into the final laps...

WTF is the point of aero on racecars anymore anyhow? I'm over it!

It's pretty clear we'd all rather see close racing. No wings. Bumper bars on the delicate bits. Rubbin is racin!

Tinkering with aerodynamics is something that F1 has been doing for a looooong time. :laughing

I watched this race with a friend, big F1 fan. Myself, not so much.

It was explained to me that the rear wings were significantly reduced in size to promote more overtaking. Something about the aerodynamic profile of the wider wing "dirtying up" the air for cars following closely behind. Sounds good to me.

I actually enjoyed watching it. The technology that goes into those cars (and subsequently, the performance that comes out) is astounding. The footage of those dudes rolling through the Esses looks like the old car chases on TV - filmed at 35mph and then played @ 3x speed. Cue the Benny Hill music! :rofl

Maybe it's not your cup of tea, but you gotta admit it's 20 times better than watching OVAL TRACK RACING :thumbdown

Tank-slapper is a term that was appropriated by the car guys a long time ago, and is used to describe any oversteer condition that tick-tocks on you like a pendulum. I assume it came from guys (like Gurney and Surtees) that had bike experience trying to put a name on this phenomenon, which is pretty common. Lacking a better term, it was called a tankslapper, which it kind of mimics in that it yanks the controls from side to side.

For a moment I considered that it might have come from the sprint car crowd, but when you set down a wheelie in one of those things with the fronts turned, the car doesn't slap - it hooks.

Hobbs is alright on this one, it just sounds weird if you aren't used to hearing the term outside of it's natural setting.

^^^Thanks :thumbup. Caused me to actually look it up

Wobble or shimmy
Wobble, shimmy, tank-slapper, speed wobble, and death wobble are all words and phrases used to describe a rapid (4–10 Hz) oscillation of primarily just the front end (front wheel, fork, and handlebars). The rest of the bike remains essentially unaffected. This instability occurs mostly at high speed and is similar to that experienced by shopping cart wheels, airplane landing gear, and automobile front wheels.
