when i was younger (about 20-21) i got my first tattoo from him. it was a easy tattoo. german eagle w/stars. basically print and trace. no problem. looks great (other than a little deep on some areas) so i go in for my next tattoo and i had a design of a dragon that i wanted on my shoulder and up my neck a little bit. he threw a tantrum about the design and refused to do it. we finally came to an agreement that i would have him redesign it and if i didnt like it, he would keep my deposit and we would be on our ways. at that point i should have just said "give me my deposit" and end it there. but what he drew up looked pretty good. not even resembling the design i had before but whatever. also much smaller than what i wanted. it turned out pretty bad. he didnt consult me on color and i had a yellow fuckin dragon on my arm. i ended up getting it covered up because it looked more like some bad generic flash art with weird colors than something unique and thought out. ive seen his work on some of my dope dealing friends that traded product for his work and their tattoos were pretty damn impressive, i just think he pulled a dick move with me. so thats why im like "fuck that guy"

You must be talking about someone else. Kevin would never trade "product" for tattoos. WTF dude.

Joey Armstrong @ Seventh Son tattoo in SF.
AWESOME guy, clean, open shop (not all cramped and dark). Great guys that work there, all extremely talented. Check out the shop, there is one guy that specializes in polynesian, asian, etc, they all have their own styles.
Great conversations, made my two 5 hour sittings VERY fun, despite some rugged spots.

I highly recommend Joey Armstrong.
I gave him my $100 deposit and he did three sketches off of my custom ideas. Consulting me on, color, size, symbols and style the entire time, taking my revisions into account each time.
Overall though, pick the artist and let him/her be an ARTIST. Show them what you want, but let their own creativity go through, you will have a 100% BETTER result than if you micromanage each part. If you feel you have to, pick a new artist because it's obvious you don't trust them enough to give you the result you want. Better yet, don't get a custom one, get some flash where you know exactly what you are getting. Just my 2cents.

This photo doesn't do the amount of detail justice, I took it with my phone, I'll see if I can dig up a better one.

Take my advice, as a top professional artist myself (different medium) who has been getting inked for 22 years. Kevin Marr is one of the highest caliber artists in the tattoo industry, and a real professional and an asset to the industry.

I care. When a guy isnt around to defend himself, it's wack as fuck to disparage a known and respected professional. The reality is more likely the dude above was a noob who had no fucking clue about tattoos.

Back to the art.
