Ride a sumo. It'll change your life.

Do 701 owners know if they have a fix for the exhaust pipe to close to the turn signal that it melts it yet?

I've been looking for a 701 too but no luck finding one.

There's no fix for it except from switching your exhaust or getting new blinkers/eliminator. It's a very clear issue with the design of the bike, as its been for many years (690smc) versus the ever tightening rules on road legality. In this case... the cat makes the exhaust stupid-hot inside the silencer (where the cat resides) and heats up the blinker. The hot blinker more readily absorbs the soot/smoke from the exhaust.

I've yet to talk to one of our dealers that didn't have a complaint about it. Husky's response? "Yea, that kinda sucks. It is what it is"

The blinkers on my 510 are toast. I have a set of smaller LED blinkers that I can angle out of the way of the exhaust, but I haven't had a chance to install them yet.

Yeah, that's what I would have done anyways; pipe and fender eliminator kit. I figured it would be something they would have tweaked the following year.

Yes, this! :thumbup

If it's the same as the SMC, I've posted this before and I found this fix on SuperMotoJunkie.com before I took delivery of my '09 SMC and did the fix as soon as I got the bike home. Since the modification, the turn signal has never melted, blackened or had heat issues in any way.

Find yourself a tea spoon, I literally heisted a long handled tea spoon from our kitchen. Make sure the spoon you choose fits the bottom curvature of the turn signal before cutting off the handle all the way down to the spoon.

I took the turn signal off to work on it. After smoothing out the spoon, I epoxied it to the bottom of the turn signal and slightly forward to take the blast of the exhaust. (see pic)

I've GPS verified the speedo on my 701 is off by around 3%. Wanna lay real money on a stock (or slip-on+intake+pc5) 701 Sumo not being able to hit 120 with stock gearing? :thumbup

I couldn't grab the speed off the front straight due to glare but this is the back straight just before going into braking from this vid - https://youtu.be/D51IrGCPIXc?t=241

I will put money on the VStrom 650 being at least 3% faster in all conditions, 55% more comfortable in town, and 72% more comfortable on the highway.

701 isn't exactly a highway bike either.... if you weren't happy with the DRZ in that regard.

I bet it's awesome at pretty much everything else though.

Just go for the VStrom 650

There's no way it does 125mph. I think you might see 110mph tops. Factory speedos are optimistic especially at high speeds.

I will put money on the VStrom 650 being at least 3% faster in all conditions, 55% more comfortable in town, and 72% more comfortable on the highway.

Where are you coming up with these figures? I can provide evidence to support every assertion I've made in this thread. That said, in front of everyone reading this, I accept your offer. I'll pit me and my 701 against you and your VStrom 650. If you aren't 3% faster than my bike in all conditions (what does that mean? 0-60, 1/4mile, top speed, etc.? Or is it dirt, street, track, MX, etc?) what would you like to wager?

But I digress... What exactly is your experience with the 701? OP asked for input on the 701 from 701 owners, which, to some degree, extends to 690 SMC/SMCR owners. Why are you recommending a bike that is NOTHING like the one he was asking about?

Please consider:
2017 701 vs 2017 WeeStrom

Supermoto vs ADV Bike
~340lbs vs ~475lbs
72hp vs 70hp
52.4ft-lb vs 46ft-lb
Fully adjustable suspension vs rear only
Praised for being the most fun motorcycle on street vs praised for being a good all-rounder but otherwise vanilla

He's asking for a supermoto to replace his... supermoto. If YOU are not comfortable on a supermoto and you'd like to make a suggestion for OP, why not go to an actual contender that's the halfway point between what he asked and what you're suggesting... the Hypermotard. It's a blend of the fun of the sumo and the comfort of the WeeStrom.

IMO, it is a very cool bike. If I didn't have my custom 1290, I would have a 701SM.

I called a local dealer on Friday and they still had 1 sumo 701. Im going to see it tomorrow if it's still available!

Thank you all for the comments. Keep em coming

Dude he's a WeeTroll.

If you're looking for primarily commuting check out used prices for a Hypermotard, stupid cheap (or a Dorsoduro if you can find one). 1/3 the price of a new 701. But not my cup of tea for commuting, as a TE/610/SM owner

I sat on a 701 supermoto once... no, twice. My butt hurt after sitting on it for 20 seconds, so I'm with you on the seat comment. It's worse than an MX bike.

Challenge accepted :thumbup! You see, the problem with comparing horsepower numbers and marketing plus-ones is they're worthless in the motorcycle world. Because the rider plays such a huge role in the bike's performance, your riding experience is based largely on the inputs - from the bike, the road, the wind. I can confidently say that if you got on a VStrom 650 you would be faster because you wouldn't be overwhelmed by the wind and noise and bumps in the road. Have you ever ridden one?

Anyway - not to thread jack OP anymore. I commuted 25,000 miles on a BMW G650 XMoto which included city, highway, lane splitting, and mountain roads. It was pretty fun and I wouldn't replace that experience for anything. But if I had to do it again I'd pick something more highway worthy.
