Their strategy is to ride conservatively, favoring consistency over speed.

Except for:

our goal is to carry a good average speed across a long distance, rather than to cook any particular section, unless there's a small bike that we think we can pass in a humiliating fashion, in which case, we'll do that because it will make up for all those times when we were thinking "goddamn is this a big bike for right here just now

:laughing

Sweet!!

The first of the Trophy Trucks are about 5 minutes out of the gate.

Thanks for links and updates. This is such a great race.

Helicopter crash near Mike's Sky Ranch. 2 dead. 2 Critical. Chopper too wadded to get numbers off it.

Weatherman's got the radio channel "code red" but there's a Trophy Truck running around with a stuck mic on the channel making it completely useless.

Welcome to the Baja 1000.

(Cross post from Race-Dezert.com)

Robby Bell is off of 1x at race mile 375 with a 15 minute lead over 14x. 9x was transported into the pit with some kind of wheel problem by a ranchers truck. They figure to be 30-45 minutes back now.

I met a local guy named jack at Godspeed last week who was running the baja 1k.. hope he does all right.. I've always wanted to ride that..

303x James Filanc, Wildomar, Calif./JN Roberts, Helena, Mont./Malcolm Smith, Riverside, Calif./Curt Gerritsen, Temecula, Calif./John Gerritsen, Valley Center, Calif./Dave Simon, Flagstaff, Ariz./Les Walker, Idyllwilde, Calif., Husqvarna TC510

:wow what a team ... JN Roberts & Malcom Smith :thumbup those OGs probally have more time in Baja than anybody.

557 Johnathon Knight, San Mateo, Calif./Hank Burgoyne, San Francisco, Calif./Richard Garavito, Montclair, Calif.

Some of the guys who went karting might remember Hank :thumbup
