Darwin award winners all of them. Yesterday coming down off the mountain, two lane road, double yellow, downhill and straight as an arrow. Three guys on bicycles, one of them right in the middle of the road, with a fully loaded water truck right on their ass. Didn't even attempt to make room, just sat there in the middle of the road (55 mph limit).
I rode bikes seriously for 40 years (still do) but I have never seen so many road hogging douche bags lately. They wont last two seasons.

1. What 2 lane road is 55mph in the mountains?
2. If I was going to be squeezed by a wide truck and I was doing, let's say, 5mph slower than the speed limit, I would not move over in fear of my life.

SoCal, coming down Angeles Forest. If you watched the Amgen tour they rode that section two days in a row...and most of Angeles Crest Hwy is 55mph. It used to be 65mph. I'm old school so I still ride at 65 mph, nothing has changed up there in the 40 years I've ridden that road.

And yeah, oh. That must of been in the TPS report...behind the cover sheet. Oh by the way if you want to know what I looked like, refer to Michael Bolton (not the douche singer).

Yeah, I don't know what to tell ya.

It is not a comforting feeling to have a vehicle tailgate you when you are rolling down doing 40mph+ on 1 inch of rubber.

I would pull over, but this is also the reason why I primarily mountain bike.

I've only bicycled from Portland Ore -to- Guatemala and back (45 years ago) Mountains, Death roads, USA coastal roads with no shoulder beyond fog line, Motor homes/tour bus/ logging trucks...
there is no problem except for one...The bicycle rider.

And when I'm on my motorcycle...The bicycle rider is no problem, what-so-ever.

I bicycle also op, and I just don't even bother riding where there is no bike lane and a narrow shoulder. Haven't ridden Angles Crest but I have been on Mulholland and was surprised to see bicyclists there also?

I ran across a very self entitled group recently. Yes staying in the road blocking traffic.

What gives you the right?? Ride sure. Be a member being responsible on the roadways hell yeah. Own it. You don't. Dick.

Don't be a dick.

Unmarked highway is 55mph, IIRC.

That's just a dick move. I don't care if you're on a bicycle, a moto, or a friggin semi truck... if someone's right behind you, let them pass. Has fuck all to do with the speed limit.

If I looked back and saw a water truck, I'd hug onto the fog line and wave him past. I'd do it for my own safety.

Usually not unless they are spread across the whole lane...or blocking a heavy truck and me from easing by.

I've been up and down Molholland on a bicycle many times (sometimes on my Santana tandem with my wife). It's narrow and twisty. When I hear a car coming, I hug the fog line, and I don't ride in the middle of the road in front of a heavy truck. Maybe I was pre-conditioned. All the way up the hill guys on bikes were taking up the whole road. Not everybody but many. 75% were doing a great job. Groups with females were doing a good job protecting their female riders and single females were protecting themselves. I hope that doesn't sound sexist but the groups with female riders were riding responsibly.

One thing I notice about most bicycle complaints is actually how short is the delay.

It would be different if traffic was held uu for several minutes. But if there no shoulder, you cannot expect any vehicle, including a bicyclist, to make a complete stop and jump over a guard rail to allow other vehicles to pass.

On the other hand, if I am on a 30 second downhill stretch where I may be doing 5 mph below the limit, I am not pulling over. Life will just be unfair when the driver behind me will have to step off the gas for a half minute.

Otherwise, I can't speak about long stretches of blocking traffic. I won't ride those roads.

If there is 3 inches of pavement between the white line and the literal edge of the road, I am not pulling over for a wide truck to pass me there.

It is safer for me (and less liability for the truck driver, since he is not going to get hurt) to stay in the middle of the road.

You might not. and that's good on you. Other cyclist def do. I've been blocked on non-mountain road by cyclist going 2 or 3 abreast.

This situation is only going to get better once AB1371 goes into effect in Sept 2014.

Were you in SoCal on Saturday by any chance?

Funny, I rode everywhere as a kid, before there were bike lanes. I merely rode next to the curb, or on the sidewalk if it had ramps. Didn't wear a helmet or use lights either. Nowadays everything is all pussified and over-complicated. Which is why the only riding I do now is in the gym. Too much hassle to relearn everything after 20 years.
