The NHL Thread, 2012/2013 season

Ottawa Senators ‏@NHL_Sens

BREAKING: #Sens agree to terms with Erik Karlsson on a seven-year contract extension. Details to follow.

7 years! Ugh. 3 max!

Select a seat for me tomorrow. My co-owner backed out though, so I will have a lot of tickets for sale in advance this year. If anyone is interested, please let me know and maybe we can work something out.

Also, I owned the crap out of that playoff bracket fantasy game! Finished top 20 for all fans of the sharks (1000+).

Detroit re-signs Helm. 4 years, 8.5M

seems like a decent deal. he's a good 3rd line player and exactly what the Wings need more of: speed and toughness.

Hey Everett, I may have some interest in snagging tickets throughout the season. Shoot me a PM when you figure out your schedule?

=====

Darren Helm is real fucking fast. I wish we still had something like him.

We do/did, in Mitchell. But Mitchell also has hands like jello. His career highlight will forever be the breakaway goal against Anaheim in 2007.

You mean Stonehand, Jr? :laughing

He always manages 1 highlight reel goal per year...but that's it. I remember that shorty goal very well. I had high hopes for him, but he never panned out to more than just quick feet.

Here's another great goal by him

I'm really happy with the Helm contract in Detroit, and I'm hoping the Wings will add Brandon Prust to that fourth line if he does not re-sign with New York before July 1st.

He'll only be 26 when that contract is up. Insane to think he'll still have over half his career remaining after a long term contract. Obviously that is provided he remains uninjured.

That is a good deal. Dude is good and inexpensive. Great combo.

so they're holding off on the 4 conference thing?

That would appear to be the case for the time being, but the new CBA hasn't been finalized just yet. I believe CBA negotiations will begin immediately following the draft and prior to free agent frenzy. Since the NHLPA previously approved the 4 conference system, though the NHL declined; things are not too far off from a complete restructure.

I don't care how the conference is set, but I hope the NHL creates future schedules where every team has a home-and-home series with every other NHL team. That would make some good hockey.

Reversed. NHL Board of Governors proposed, NHLPA rejected. They rejected for a few reasons:
1. They felt like it was unfair that east divisions at 7 teams, while 8 in the west. And since 4 teams from each division face off in the first round, it would be easier for the east coast team to reach the playoffs.
2. NHLPA were not involved in the making of the realignment, and when they tried to give input, it was rejected. Basically a power move prior to CBA negotiations.
