The Ultimate DRZ-400SM Thread - Mods, Tips and Tricks

I know its not a performance mod...but maybe switch out the ACCT for a MCCT?

Its one of those piece of mind things, for me at least. I havent seen too many with it though, :dunno
 
If your going to tear all the way down into the bottom end to install ceramic bearings, put in a +5mm hotrod crank while your at it and add a SSW cylinder spacer, then choose from a assortment of bore kits.

take your time, its not like you dont have other bikes to play with. Have the head ported and valve seats enlarged by a few mm on both intake and exhaust, then run your Ecams and a FCR41.

In fact just pull your motor and send it to Sisneros Speed Works.

Bike is coming along.. Going through my suspension options now. I've already spoken with Ray Perez regarding setting up the bike, and for the price, it sounds like a real good deal! I've also outsourced an Ohlin's rear shock, and I may put that on this weekend.

Hey Brad, i'll probably just go with him. I was somewhat concerned about internally lowering the fork and shock, since this will still be a street bike, but he said it should be fine for street duty.

Also have an R6 throttle tube coming :)
 
Can somebody post the very basic mods? Like jetting settings, 3X3 airbox mod, popluar exhaust choices, etc?

I've mentioned this in other posts, but this seems like the place to post it again.
The 2003/2004 R-1 throttle assembly is an easy swap (10 minutes), a cheap buy ($13.00 or less) and a BIG improvement in throttle operation. It makes your bike get to FULL throttle with less rotation, so you don't have to re-position your hand during full on/full off throttle transitions.
We have done this mod on the DRZ-SM, a KLR650, my wifes EX500, and many more. You will be amazed at how it transforms the throttle action of your bike.
(Don't do this on your liter bike! They have too much power, and don't need any extra help!)
My 2005 SM has FCR39MX, full Yosh stainless, 3x3, canister delete, more.

Hi Lonster, based on your post and others recomendation, i've ordered an 03 R6 throttle tube (same thing?) for my DRZ. I'll give the full report once it gets here. Did you have to trim the end of the throttle tube during install?

I also think a must have for the SM bike is the Acerbis SM fender. It makes freeway riding much more comfortable, as the stock fender is large enough to create some good drag. The only drawback to the Acerbis fender is that it will fling more water towards you.
 
I'm going to do the throttle mod as soon as my motor is broken in with an oil change and valve clearance check.
 
I believe the R-6 throttle tube is NOT a 1/6 turn, like the R-1 is. I have no experience with the R-6 throttle tube, so I cannot comment on whether it will work or not.
I know that the R-1 tube does work, and is priced accordingly. You may want to change your order or just be aware that the R-6 may be different.
I'll post a pic of my install later today.

Thanks for the info again. I will try to change my order, but if not, i'll just keep the R6 throttle tube as my spare (I have an '05 R6 as well) I guess, if I get bored tonight, i'll just swap the throttle tube from my current R6 and try it out.

Which year R1 did you get? '03 and '04 bikes are completely different.
