They somehow found a way to make the new M3 and M4 have greater MPG and fuel economy than the Civic and everything else that is not a hybrid. And the amazing thing is that it will still do 0-60 in 4 seconds.

Sick car.

2013 M3 is 16 MPG combined EPA
2013 Civic HF is 33 MPG combined EPA

When numbers are quoted online they may be down hill with a tail wind. If the numbers used are comparing Euro drive cycles with EPA, the euro drive cycles are whimpy -turning out high MPG numbers- and the EPA tests are most real world. Also sometimes its a unit conversion problems because of the difference from the US Gallon and the Imperial Gallon use in the UK.
1 US Gallon =.83 Imperial Gallon

The M3 is quite heavy (3300-3500 lb) if they could cut some fat and get aero like a Tesla, then they could improve MPG and 0-60 mph. They cant do much more about rolling resistance because they are always going to put big sticky tires on a M3. If you gutted a M3 lowered the weight to 2000 lb, replace the tires with narrow high rolling resistance, taped the seams and remove mirrors and wipers then drove slow and smooth then Im sure you can get good numbers maybe 60 MPG. It still wont beat a first gen Honda Insight or some boat-tail civics.

true because they use electric pumps now. the one in our x5 went out at 6X000 miles. 5 k later, expansion tank.


but the new M3/4 weights 3300 pounds. lots of carbon fiber and aum

I will get either this M3 or C7 in a couple years. I think ultimately C7 will cost more due to resale value and the amount of mods available


3300lb is LIGHT by today's standard. an E36 (95-99) M3 weights that much. C7 weights about 3300 with fiberglass and CF structure

As I understand it every single component of a BMW is considered a wear item. At least they had the good sense to make them modular enough that replacing that water pump will take a relative noob ~two hours and $100.

FWIW I've owned and tracked 2 2008 M3's and whatever has gone wrong on both (which was barely even worth mentioning: a battery, and some various lights) INCLUDING all maintenance have been free to me. The only money I've put into them has been tires, aftermarket stuff, oil (the V8 burns a quart every 5000 miles or so). Granted neither one saw 50k miles yet.

I'm soooooo going to trade in my latest one for a new one. Unless the motor sucks.:cool
 
Trading high revving V8 for turbo 6= Fail. Torque, yes, but turbo lag and crappy throttle response in return.
 
Whatever the BMW does, it makes people feel good about buying a BMW, initially.

30+ mpg ? Does it have KERS or are you supposed to plug that sucker into a coal burning electrical plant?
 
I don't understand how one would cross-shop an M3 and a Vette or other real sportscar. An M3 is not a sportscar, it's a sedan-based car. Sportscars start on their own sheet of paper, they don't share their chassis with a bread-n-butter sedan. So you can make them sit as low as you want. Can't do that with an M3. The dash, firewall, and shock mounts are just as high as they are on the regular 3-series. So, while it might kick ass on the track, it's not the same experience as a purpose-built sportscar like a 911, Lotus, Vette, Ferrari, etc.

The autobahn is not as fast as you may think. Some areas have variable speed limits that go down to ~40 MPH when the conditions warrant it. 75 MPH is the average.

here are some of the speed limits:


37 mph:
Buses carrying standing passengers
Motorcycles pulling trailers

50 mph:
Vehicles with maximum allowed weight exceeding 3.5 t (except passenger cars)
Passenger cars and trucks with trailers
Buses

62 mph:
Passenger cars pulling trailers certified for 100 km/h
Buses certified for 100 km/h not towing trailers

First off. Your numbers are wrong.

It's 130kph recommended speed limit on the Autobahn. No limit when 'End of Restrictions' sign comes up (white circle with diagonal black lines across).

80, 90, 100, or 110kph in bad weather. And 60kph around road construction/maint. 100kph on the 'B' roads outside city limits. 50kph within city limits and 30kph residential. Never the less. All speed limits are clearly posted on circular signs in red and black on a white field.

The people you spoke with are probably young and drive a 4 cyl econo box and cannot afford the insurance, much less the petrol. All other older more prominent Germans, like in Bavaria. 'Haul Ass' on the Autobahn and will school you if you don't get the fuck out of the way..!

My girlfriend drives a small POS car and doesn't go very fast. It took me 6 months getting used to Hauling Ass.

Don't get all preachy with me. I have a valid Führerschein and have driven all over Europe, in all weather conditions for many years now. Having a BMW is not that big a deal in Germany. It's like having a Ford Taurus in the US.
