The commercial for the GMC Super Cruise scares me as a motorcycle rider.

Did some reading an it was first only set up to use on interstates. But now has been expanded to more roads.

"Super Cruise can now be used on marked, divided highways known as interstates. This expansion will allow Super Cruise to work on a wider range of state and federal roadways, including those with only minor changes. The following routes are some of the most notable ones getting gradually incorporated into the network as a result of this development:

The Mother Road, or US Route 66 (Route six six)
The Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) – CA Route 1
The Overseas Highway – US Route 1
The Trans-Canada Highway (South Park’s “Only Road”)
When the vehicle’s precision LiDAR map data, real-time cameras, radars, and GPS are all working together under “sensor fusion,” the car is driven along the lane path for a hands-free driving experience. These systems work in tandem to create a sensory zone around the vehicle that improves driver comfort and convenience by keeping it centered in the lane and elevating motorists’ confidence.

The vehicle’s speed is adjusted using the set point, and it steers to maintain lane position. When available on select models, both driver-initiated lane changes and automatic passing of slower traffic may be done in order to pass slower traffic and move from a lane that may be ending while monitoring the driver’s head position and/or eyes in relation to the road to ensure attention."

Can't find any tests of the super cruise operating near motorcycles. Lanesplitting next to GMC using super cruise looks scary.

All the we can drive your shit wagon stuff scares me.

Your computer SHOULD NOT drive for you.

All this shit started with McDonalds "You deserve a break today" ad campaign creating a sense of entitlement in the general population. As in "You expect me to work at driving this thing and pay attention?" Gonna be a fucked-up world coming. Soon. Glad I'm old to tell you the truth.

The commercial should come with disclaimers saying may cause severe bodily injury including death and destruction of your your family and innocent people near you…
The Bay Area unfortunately seems to be the willing testing ground for this shit despite the fact it’s one of the most difficult places in the US to drive. Aghhhr!

Agree with all concerns above, but...
My sad observation is that ones and zeros are marginally better than most of the breathing driving public. I know for a fact that my being a motorcycle rider makes me a better car driver in nearly every imaginable way.
If I was handing out drivers licenses there would be no traffic jams because I would set the bar much, much higher than it currently is.

That's why I'm changing from sport touring to trucking a dual sport while driving assist technologies shake down for the next decade or so. Hopefully the NHTSA steps in with that regulatory whip after the inevitable high-profile accidents.

Well said. I hate to sound dour, but I'm glad I lived when I did because the future looks Biblically Bad to me. Nearly every day now seems to bring a headline that leaves me shaking my head and sad.

Ad reps are paid way too much for the content they provide.

But, but, but those suits! :laughing

I'm all for interactive driver aids, they can help, but those sleeping Tesla drivers do send a chill down my spine.

I'm a lot more concerned about all those driving under the influence now than the scary robot future.

I have to push this way back into the 50's with power steering, power brakes, auto transmissions, effortless operation with mere fingertips.
Cars got a numb feeling for comfort, floaty cornering, more roadholding weight.

Not only is the self driving truck scary, but the fact that a young adult wanting a truck for working better be able to afford an 80k price tag for a new one is scary too.

For a forum that is based in the technological epicenter of the world, I always LOL at how fast the luddite machine goes to 10 around here. Then pile on with some jawing about the future generations and how lame they are and this place seems decidedly out of touch at times.

As we all know our current analog based driving kills around 40k and injures hundreds of thousand every year. Over half are single vehicle accidents. My money is 1 and 0's will do much better than that in 10-20 years, particularly when no one else is involved.

I'm not a proponent of a future where we get in a pod and let Randy the Robot take the wheel, but if the goal is safer roads, technology will play a big role. I'll add too that I'm not here saying "its the future, deal with it", rather I'm saying things are going to change, but not necessarily the way they appear to be unfolding at the moment. The hyperventilating (on all sides) about the future of transportation is waaaay out over the ski's of reality.

Yeah, I still prefer to drive the car myself.

I recently made a post on the Bronco forum with the title "Pre-Collision Assist is a Menace". My point was that if you weren't paying attention it wasn't likely to wake you up in time for you to keep from crashing, and if you were paying attention it's a distraction. I was making a lane change and squeezing into a gap in traffic, which required me to speed up and get a bit close to the car in front before squeezing over and it beeps and flashes stuff on the screen once you get a bit close. I don't want that.

There is an option to turn it off, but it asks you every single time that you start the engine if you want to keep it turned off, requiring you to move down one position and hit "OK" to keep it. All of the new nanny features really annoy me.

The GMC commercial bugs me every time I see it, encouraging people to not pay attention to their driving. :mad

I am hereby boycotting GMC and will NOT buy any of their vehicles ever. :x

jbawden brings up some good points, but I suspect the motivation behind this kind of technology has less to do with corporations truly concerned with our well being and safety as it does with, How can we sell even more gadgets and content to drivers needlessly suffering from FOMO, and needlessly distracted with taking any sort of personal responsibility behind the wheel of a large, potentially lethal vehicle?

If you can clap your hands as you drive, just imagine how much more you can download, watch, text, play, shop, etc on your gadget now too!

Yes... we live in the center of tech. Until the tech is really publically disclosed on near misses and areas where issues occur I am not going to appreciate the robots effectiveness.

HWY 1 huh.. oh boy. At least you can watch the coast line vs the road right?? Can't wait to pass one of those robo trucks like they are tied to a fence post. :laughing :ride

I agree with Mr. Bawden that the 1 & 0's will be very strong in the future and given the avg (suck) skill of the drivers it will be better for all of us and when the car can drive you home from the bar it will be better still.

Just had a Tesla pull out right in front of me this AM. Obviously not on auto pilot. Obviously a driver with avg (suck) skills. He did not even see me until I was polishing his rear license plate. :facepalm

I am at 100% agreement that generally motorcyclists make better drivers and limit the suck to raise the bar.

I'm not sure if this make sense and/or is self-contradictory (hey, at least I'm honest :)), but I think I'd feel more comfortable if that commercial showed Patty Cake Man in a theoretical future truck without a steering wheel altogether. Or fully self-driving in other words.

As others have mentioned, it's the interim phase between quasi and fully self-driving vehicles that truly scares me.

The idea that Patty Cake Man is supposed to look up from watching his favorite OnlyFans star and doing whatever to himself and then suddenly take control of the vehicle with his wits about him in an emergency situation is a joke.

What Patty Cake Man really needs is a Bubble Car ala Woody Allen's 1973 Sleeper film. What a classic!
