Thoughts on Michelin Pilot Road 2 Tires....

I actually didn't like mine compared to my Avon storms which don't last long enough. The PR2 didn't feel as they had the same grip Im now trying out the Pirelli Strada's and will see how they feel. If I don't like them Im going back to Avon's

I dont know about the storms but I would imagine the Pirelli Diablo Strada's to be much less sticky then the PR2...

I will admit that while the PR2's DO grip for the riding I do (fairly spirited) they dont FEEL as sticky or confidence inspiring as I'd like. Thus I am trying out some stickier rubber and coincidently am looking at Pirelli's as well, but the Strada's wont even stick like the PR2.

I am looking at either the Rosso's or the Corsa III's.

A lot depends on how you plan to ride the bike and the amount of grip expected. If riding fairly hard expect rear tires to wear quickly.

+1 First set of PR2's went 7.5K on the back. Second set went 4K on the back.:shocker Nothing wrong with the tire. Plenty of grip, though not as much feedback as a sport tire. About what one would expect for an S/T tire. You'll probably like it, but as RR said, YMMV.

Also look into the skidstone bt016 I believe Hooli has a set on his gsxr and likes them, although any tire is fine at grandma's pace :p

I just got a pair after going through bt016s. I miss the planted feeling I get from the bridgestones. I like my PR2cts alot, especially its wear rate, but I think I'll be going to something with a softer sidewall. My bike feels twitchier mid corner now. Probably be different if I werent 150lbs on a light bike with a fairly upright seating position.

I've got the PR2s on my multistrada and they have plenty of grip, but they seem to have a lack of feel. Sounds like it may just be this tire's construction? [threadjack] What sport/touring tires out there offer the best feel/feedback? [/threadjack]

FWIW, the past few years I've run the PR2's, the PR1's, Metzler Z6's (though not the current Interact version), Diablo Stradas, and BT-021's. No Avons or Continentals or Dunlops. Of those, the best feel seemed like a rough tie between the PR2's and the Diablo Stradas, with PR2's getting the nod for tread life between those two choices. The PR1's were the most numb. The BT-021's are there right now are not bad, but you'd never mistake them for a BT-016. It will be interesting to see how long the BT-021's last. I might try the Dunlops next. :dunno

Tires are such a personal thing, and what one rider loves, another will hate, so it makes sense to try different tires to find what you like. FWIW, I think you make a construction (and maybe weight?) trade-off when going with an S/T tire that will make them somewhat numb by comparison to a decent sport tire. But for the street, the grip is sufficient, IMHO.

of all the S/T tires I've tried I felt the Avon Storms had the best feel to them.

I have been using the Pirelli Diablos on my VFR, including 2 track days on each set. I got about 5000 miles on the first set.

What other tires have you sampled? How did the profile of the tire compare? Did the Diablos require a lot of effort to get the bike to turn in or did it fall into the corner like a Pilot Power (or less so, the Pilot Road 2).

This is my big consideration as I am looking into two other sport tires from Pirelli (Rosso and Corsa III) but have heard they dont turn in like a Michelin. I dont need Pilot Power profile but I would like it to be atleast that of the Road 2.

The diablos turn in nicely, the only michelin I can compare to is the dot races, pretty similar, neither really fall in,to me anyways.Dunlop has a new sportmax Q2 coming out,trackday/street tire and it got a really good review in RRWorld, prolly not available yet tho

Ill look up that dunlop... No rush, still plenty of thread on my tires.

Just read the review, that Q2 does sound pretty nice!!!

Might have to look into that when more reviews are out etc...

Did some more reading, a few people said the dunlops arent the best wearing tire.

Also in this link...

Twice the Rosso is compared with the Pilot Road 2. This is not accurate, is it?

I think Pirelli wise I have decided to try the Rosso, dont need the wet grip of the Corsa III or the extra grip (guessing its a more expensive tire) but I will still look into the Q2 as well...

Rosso has some neat technology into it, but I like that the Q2 appears to be designed closer to the Pilot Power profile for faster turn in then the smoother Pirelli.

I love PP & PP2's, tried Road 2's on my tourer and took them off a week later. went with Roadsmarts, couldn't be happier. Roadsmarts took 1st place in a touring tire test, and the Road 2's took 5th. I concur with thier resaults.

I'd love to hear more about what you didnt like...

I think the thing I dont like about them (love them for the most part) is that they feel numb... Which is why I am looking into a spotier tire, because I want more grip and feel.

I keep hearing mixed things about the Dunlops, sounds like they work well but in the long run dont wear great. Any word on that? The Q2 Sportmax is supposed to bridge the gap between the Roadsmart dual compounds and there racing line (dont know the name). Supposed to be a high end street tire capable of track riding.

I have heard great things about the Rosso's though, good mileage, plenty of grip but then I heard mixed things about how much feel they have... I do think I have eliminated Corsa III from my list, doesnt seem necessary, the Rosso will do the job cheaper and with better mileage. But I have to decide between the Rosso and Dunlop's newest tire.

I'd rather not to talk someone into or out of a tire that I like, what can I speak to is that my experience with the Road 2 tires, which felt super-numb and marble feeling. Having a tire that last a long time, but doesn’t inspire confidence is the exact tire I stay clear from.

Roadsmarts’ are marketed as a touring tire, touring tires tend to last longer than there sport counterpart, I don’t know how long they will last, but it last however long it last and with that I’ll be satisfied.

I won’t use a tire because it lasts long, since that has not been an issue or a priority in the past. Tires’ are the only thing keeping my bike in contact with the road, so I purchase tires with that in mind, first and foremost.

To date, I’ve had 17 motorcycles and about 30 years riding expierence, I have never, ever taken a set of brand new tires off a bike because of how they handled, until the Road 2’s. I’ve have found that there are folks that can’t tell tire from a rock, I believe that I’m in tune with both my suspension and tires and can typically tell when my tires are a few pounds off in air pressure. I also believe that different riding styles work better with different tire types.

Worth mentioning again is that Roadsmart’s took 1st place in some motorcycling magazine (sorry can’t remember which magazine) and after trying both new Road 2’s (took 5th place) back-to-back with the Roadsmarts, it understandable and I completely agree how they reached this conclusion. Also, I don't want sport tires on my touring bike, nor touring tires on my sport bike, they make them specifically for a particular model and purpose, not going to try to fool Mother Nature on this one.

Hope this helps,

Michael

I mentioned this on another board and one of my friends that has been riding for 40+ years just talked me into the Bridgestone 016s.

I was looking into the BT-016's myself until I saw my friend ride up with a fresh front. The side of the tire had rubber forming like you would see on a race bike, except it was 1-1.5" away from the edge!

That seems to soft to me... But I'd love to hear your experience with them (how many miles did you get?) as they seem like a neat tire.

For me I am going to research the Q2 Sportmax some more but I am really liking what I am hearing about the Pirelli Rosso's... Seems like a good tire for me.

Also, numb is exactly how I feel about my PR2's. They grip better then the OEM Pirelli's did and they also turn in WAY better but they dont translate that YOUR STUCK TO THE ROAD feeling as much as I would like. But then again, I have never used a true sport tire (yet) or any other ST'ing tires so I cant say how much of my imaginative "your stuck to the road feeling" really exists. Could just be a figment of my imagination and a feeling I dream about. I think a nice sticky sport tire will give me that feeling though... of just being glued down.

Very happy with them on my Concours.

Pretty good in the rain too.
