Time for another BART strike? (Contract rejected)

but you're telling me they can't maintain a garden and do their own landscaping?

their request is reasonable.

a firefighter operating gas powered gardening equipment, alarm goes off, equipment gets dropped, someone runs into it, or the firefighter himself gets injured, lawsuits fly.

any injury while landscaping is an expensive and unnecessary risk. for the firefighters to be down one man because he was picking daisies and pulled his back is probably not acceptable to a person caught in a fire. there are all kinds of liability issues.

gardening equipment and fire alarms aren't a good combination.

the obvious explanation why bart isn't self-sustaining (ie profitable) is because there is no competition, and there is no incentive to run efficiently.

unions feeling entitled to wage increases just because they want one.
not because service has improved or any other performance metric has been met.

union members are unable to see that the system is unprofitable because of the high operating costs (eg large part being employee compensation).

This is the reason WHY when the labor movement was gaining steam in America 100 years ago, all of the founding fathers of Union Labor (the ones who were humans i.e. not Communists) were so AGAINST Public Service Labor Unions.

Yes, this would never happen when they were washing their fire engine, cooking, or sleeping. AFAIK part of the job description involves being able to drop everything and run.

But if they're really incapable of gardening in their down time then I would suggest they don't need a garden, either. Them petunias ain't putting out my house fire.

So they're similar to say, a Greyhound bus driver. How much do they cost? How much is a ticket to LA? Sorry Boney, private transportation does a far better job when given the chance.

Greyhound drivers start at $25/hr last year. They probably top near what the BART wages are. Remember, you're looking at BARTs top hourly wage, not the starting wage. So, for all intents and purposes, Greyhound drivers earn about what BART drivers earn. I didn't find their benefits package with my simple Google search.

So far, nobody's come up with a valid comparison that says BART driver should be paid otherwise.

There is a bit more involved in driving bus long distance than siting in a cab of a BART train and watching instruments while computer runs the train.

I don't see anything that says this is their top pay:

Nor do I imagine greyhound bus drivers get a pension without contributing, or flat rate healthcare for the entire family (that's a HUGE value for both of those).

Greyhound bus drivers also load and unload the luggage, and navigate some shitty traffic and drivers-the trains are automatic.

The reason there's no comparison is because at most places, when they automate the equipment, they get rid of the people who used to run it.

What about station agents vs gas station attendants?

What's a "gas station attendant"? Certainly not the dude I buy an occasional Gatorade or lottery ticket from...

:laughing

There is a full service station at 19th and Judah I think it is. I pulled into the Gas Station and the kid ran up to my car and I almost smacked my door into him. :laughing I was shocked, but old enough to know what a Full Service station was so I didn't panic.

BART is obviously top heavy. The top ~10% of workers are over $100,000 base and total cost of employee is often 40% of the base with no overtime.

The overtime is out of control too. Parker, E. a Master Police Officer earned More overtime than base pay for a total cost of employee at $298,160.

YUCK.

Train some replacements.

Actually, Glassdoor.com has it on AVERAGE as $19/ hr…meaning some are getting $22/hr and others are getting $16/hr.

I don't know where you came up with $25. That's pretty darn high...

$28-30/hr. with benefits That's how much BART workers should be getting paid. That's a middle class wage. You never know. You might want that available in case you lose your white collar job.

Middle class wages are being decimated while the top 1% are taking a higher and higher percentage of the revenue

The case for $22-an-hour minimum wage
Sen. Elizabeth Warren makes it, citing a study that shows we'd all be earning at least that much if wages kept up with gains in productivity

Only $28-30? Why not make it $50 or $100?

Fuck that shit. A window would've been busted out or something. There's no way I'm sitting on train that long with brake dust in the cabin. I can't believe they didn't evacuate the train. :wtf

You think it was better outside?
