Tips on moving from The Bay to NC

Scouting trip planned for next month. We're just going for 4 days. Not where to stay in Asheville yet but I want to meet with a realtor to talk rentals and I'm trying to set up some meetings for prospective jobs.

Thanks again :thumbup

Check out Hendersonville as well, cool little town last time I was there.

Yep, everything within 50mi of Asheville is game. Not sure if we'll make it this trip but like I said, Arden is also a possibility.

Hmm.

GA, SC or NC for me maybe, as long as I can nail down a Fed tech job. :thumbup

And when the shitty weather hits, I'll head down to the Caribbean for awhile. :party

:thumbup I think you'd have an easier time finding a job then me. My wife has lived in SC and GA and doesn't wanna go back. Her folks just bought a place in North West FL. so we can skip down to the Caribbean too :teeth

Lets go :ride

Me and my wife are moving to Asheville NC next year. At least that's the plan.

Tara's sister, husband & two kids will be there around December we think; and she wants to spend more time with them and her parents who just bought a place in Floidah. My family's here but I can always visit for the holidays so that's not a big deal. (I will miss you chuckle heads though)

Her sister moving there will hopefully help us in finding a house to rent.

I'm all for Western NC. The Tail of the Dragon's close by as well as plenty of other roads and mountains to ride. The climate looks similar and the research on the city of Asheville looks promising.

We'd both be moving without jobs but have some money saved. She can write and edit part time but I'd have to find something in Tech Sales or similar.

So, do we buy a box truck and move ourselves after selling the extra cars, bikes, furniture etc... or do we hire a moving company?

Thoughts & experiences?

You will love it and your life will be wonderful on a whole new level. Once you settle in, you will be horrified that you didn't do it years ago.

Then, you will wither and die from humidity.

What was it about SC & GA she disliked?

IIRC our very own Deeter now lives in Harrisburg. :)

She's just been there done that. Her sister's moving to NC with her family which was the major factor in picking Asheville in the first place.

Naw, NC ain't that humid. I lived a few years in Louisiana and Mississippi, now THAT is humidity.

Just bring something to clean your visor when out riding, if one of these giant June Bugs splats up side your head, it's both loud and messy. :p

Just because it isn't a swamp doesn't mean it isn't humid. New York is too fucking humid. It kills me in the Summer when I go back. Remember you have to use the Pacific West as your baseline for humidity...

When you step out of baggage claim at Miami International it feels like you just walked outside into a sauna.

I was in northern Floridah this summer and it wasn't too bad. (In the shade) I flew into NY in the summer, walked out for a smoke and the humidity hit me like a brick. :wtf

Humidity's not too bad once you're used to it. Biggest thing with it is, it doesn't cool off in the evening like here, the air holds the heat. 9pm and you're sweating your ass off on the deck, with your beer dripping and the A/C condensate running like a river. But mostly, you only notice when it gets really bad, like the summer days when you get the sudden afternoon thunderstorm and inch or so of rain, and an hour later you're breathing soup. The good news is, people don't freak out when it rains. And it'll rain like someone turned on the bath - so hard you can't see 20 ft in front of you, always fun on a bike.

Hope you don't mind bugs. Dunno why there are none out here. Your house will have flies, mosquitos, no-see-ums, chiggers, ants, big-ass palmetto bugs (inch-long cockroaches that live in the leaf litter and get drawn indoors in winter by the warmth and moisture), stink bugs, lady bugs, carpenter bees, white-faced hornets (mean bastards), japanese beetles, you name it.

:laughing That's all? No, I don't mind bugs.

I've researched the climate for the area and it's not that extreme. When it's 100 here it's still fuckin' a 100 and there's nothing I can do about it. :dunno

Cold is fine too as long as I don't have to dig my car outta the driveway every morning to go to work.

:p Try San Juan, Puerto Rico. :laughing

When I was there back in '98, got to my room after work, showered, fresh clothes...then I stepped outside into same. :mad

And to make things even more surreal, not only did one of the regular evening thunderstorms pop up, people were walking around in t-shirts and shorts in it. :wtf

Whoot :banana

I got an email reply from Öhlins USA. I'm going to try and set up a meeting/interview with them while we're there :cool
