Tire Warmers w/o Generator

Since generators are so expensive, I have this great idea of using the 120V power plug in the back of the wife's SUV to power the tire warmers. However, I'm not sure I calculated this correctly. Has anyone tried this?

Assuming I have an Optima deep cycle battery rated at 75Amp-hours @12V or 7.5AH@120V.

Tire warmers are 1150W (let's say 1200 to make it easy).

1200W=120V*10A
That means that 7.5AH/10Amps = 0.75Hours or 40 minutes before its dead. Is that really true? I guess I could keep the car running but that kind of defeats the purpose.

Anyone have any input

I believe those powerlettes are only rated for 400w max, at least the one in my truck is and the engine has to be running. I don't think you can run tire warmers from that outlet regardless of the battery.:cool

Just buddy up with someone that has an EU3000 and buy them a 6-pack of their favorite beverage or gas for the generator. In theory your idea *might* work, but a car battery isn't designed to have a large current pulled out of it for a long period of time(without the engine running), and you'll probably kill the battery if you repeatedly drain it like that w/o the engine running.

If a one time charge of $950 for an ECU2000i is "too much"--do yourself a favor and dont race--thats 1 to 1 1/2 weekend of tires

warmers run off a car are like fake tits on a fat chick, a waste of time.

Get a REALLY long extension cord and plug into people generators when they're not looking (or into the outlets at each track).

lol, mikey, you no need tire warmers at this time. for the race, head out at first call, warm tires in hot pit and warm up lap, and you are good to go.....

ps poor joe, he paid a lot of dues to give that advise he just gave you

Brian,

It's a mental thing man...100%. I've got issues with cold tires. At NRS, that one lap of warmup didn't give me enough confidence that they were up to temp and I was worried about it. If i don't have to buy a generator it would be a relatively small price to pay for peace of mind.

true jeff, all mental, i am the same way. and for cold weather like that it will take more then a lap to get the tire to optimal operating temp..... ;) summer time (apr thou sept) you probaly won't worry so much...

Oh yeah... you just keep telling yourself that... haven't you met his girlfriend who is practically a Holly Madison look-alike??

Judging by his current girlfriend, I have a feeling Joe never went hoggin' to "pay his dues"... :rofl

Tire warmers are nice, but they are not absolutely necessary. Many of us raced on waaaay worse rubber when tire warmers didn't even exist... in fact, I think the new #1 plate holder still doesn't use warmers.

If you can't afford to do it right, hold off until you can or you will end up wasting a bunch of money on solutions that never quite work properly (see all the crap generators on craigslist... ;) )

actually, we broke up... I know, I know, she was hot... But there might be other holly madisons out there, right? In fact, Holly still isn't married!

No matter how hot that girl looks there is somebody in this world who is fed up with her S**t!!

Tire warmers always make you feel like you can go just a little harder on the first lap... Godo warmers anyway... Shitty ones only are in your head I think.... Btw I chased my buddy around in a practice session who went to a race with me and he never uses warmers and he rips it up the first laps... Ahhh scary for me still.

E-Bay... friend bought a 1000w generator for $500-600. Wasn't a name brand but the thing worked great for the 2years he raced, then he sold it......
