I have some extra money and was looking at two things. Either sign up for a couple track days or buy a used dirtbike. I have a dedicated track bike but I don't know how much I'm gonna be using it. Infineon is the cosest track but it's the most money. Carnegie is the closest park and I have always wanted a dirtbike to improve my skills as well as owning a bike so I can work as a medic at dirt bike races

What would you do?

You can always put flat track tires on the dirt bike and use it for super motard.

Hollister is 5 bucs a truck.
Metcalf is 6 bucs a truck...

I vote Dirt bike with a set of SM wheels... then you can take it to the track as well!

Save some dough and do both!

Big track days and dirt days are both good fun and good skill development. Dirt days are cheaper and easier, though, so you can do them more frequently. When you have a dirtbike and a trackbike in the garage, you're good to go for whatever you have the time and money to do.

When I retired from AFM I went and bought a nice little YZ125. It has been an absolute blast and super cheap, relatively. You can get a lot of saddle time on a dirt bike, and it can only help your road skills.:party

That's what I got...

Cow Mtn. and knoxville are free. Camp and ride all weekend for the price of the fuel u use. Track days are a blast but the $$$ adds up quickly. I sold my last track day and used the $$$ for a mounth worth of gas in the truck and dirt bike riding every weekend:thumbup.

What will you get the most utility out of?

Dirtbikes are tons of fun. IMO Dirt>Street althought I like both alot.

Riding dirt can't be praised enough, but.... riding in these regulated parks, is no where near the value of what it could be (used to be).

How (I don't live in the Bay Area, so I don't know) workable would some dirt exposure be, and some SuperMoto exposure?

If it was me, I would get a dirt bike. Trackdays are expensive, and even more expensive when you crash.:)

Stan you got a dirt bike?

I'm in the market for a lightweight 600-class track-only bike to put next to the XR in the garage. :thumbup

What I've found is that dirtbiking helps your practical motorcycling skills, i.e. the ones that keep your ass in the saddle when the shit comes down the pipe, and the track helps those more lofty skills, such as creating ripples in the space-time continuum on the nose of your bike. :teeth There is, of course crossover.

I, for one, surely would have eaten shit on Tuesday had I not had dirt experience. I was coming down some ravine road with a group, and there was all sorts of shit all over the pavement, and more than one time, I felt the wheels coming out from under the bike in a BIG way. Luckily, I dirt ride quite a bit, so this is not an unfamiliar feeling. :cool

The new Honda dirts are so SWEET!! Score yourself one of those! :thumbup

Dirtbike for now and if you want to SM it out with another set of wheels. When Spring/Summer rolls around you should have some $$$$ aside for trackdays on your trackbike!

ITS A WIN WIN SITUATION! :teeth

Somone was asking earlier about dirt exposure in the Bay Area. I know there's a dirt bike park with both a track and goat trails at the southern 85/101 junction; the park is called Metcalf I believe.

depends...when the rain comes do you want to be bummed your not on the track, or stoked to go hit the dirt???same with those sunny days... Do you want to focus on lap times or getting dirty? It's up to you, brother! Be sure to share your decision.
