Trailer Registration

So Kelly bought a trailer when she was back home in Mississippi recently and used it to bring some stuff back here to California. The trailer was not registered or titled in any way in Mississippi since the state does not require it for any trailer with a GVWR of less than 5000 lbs. Anyway, I have an appointment with the DMV this week to get a plate on the trailer so that we can use it here in California. I've already got the fees estimated at $26 ( :banana ) but I'm confused on a few other things.

This trailer doesn't appear to have a VIN on it anywhere and in fact, the folks at TSC told her there isn't one since Mississippi doesn't require them to have one. They told her if she wanted to register it anyway, she'd have to just generate her own numbers. Apparently that's what her dad did with his trailer. The only "paperwork" given to her was the store receipt.

What can I expect at the DMV? I'm assuming I have to bring the trailer to have it inspected, but since there's no VIN, title or any other paperwork outside of a receipt, should I be expecting a big headache?

Do you have the manufacturer's name? They can provide the MSO (Mfg Statement of Origin)- that or the receipt will get things started.

She's got the receipt. And I think there may be a VIN number on the side.

Thing is, how am I supposed to get it to the DMV if there's no plate on it? Is the inspection necessary even for trailers?

Get all the docs you can before you head into DMV. Multi-trips of a fookin time suck to the extreme...a call to the mfg is worth it!

Is registration required for any trailer in California?

Yes they actually inspect the trailer to verify the VIN. Do you mean the vin is on the side of the receipt or the side of the trailer?

I registered my new trailer this summer.

1) make an apt at the dmv, usually 2 week wait. you need to do the inspection of the trailer and VIN plate first (usually done only in the afternoons, first come first serve, you pull around to where the driver's meet to start their driving road test.
2) bring the MSO
3) bring the VIN plate, which matches the VIN on the MSO. the VIN needs to be fastened by screws on the trailer if it's not engraved onto the trailer.
4) bring your license.

where ever she bought the trailer should have provided a VIN plate for the trailer. the If she didn't get one, you need to call that lame company and get one asap. you cannot pass inspection without it. without the inspection for filled out and cleared, you can't register your trailer. if you can't register your trailer, you ain't gonna get a license plate.

they will gave you temporary registration, but you will to come back to complete all the paperwork.

PM if you have questions. Took me 4 visits. It's my first trailer. at least registration is good for 4 yrs.

They're not really a lame company for not providing documentation that isn't required in Mississippi.

Any idea if you have a trailer that was built from scratch? There is no VIN or previous owner or any former registration, etc etc..? How does it pass inspection without this??

Dmv can issue a vin
Its a small blue sticker they affix to the tong of the trailer
Do you have a bill of sale or just the receipt.
Also Make sure all your lights work a Dmv will look at this as well

Also Make sure all your lights work a Dmv should, but doesn't always look at this as well

FTFY.

when i registered my folding HazardFraught trailer, they didn't even bother looking; said if they didn't work i'd be chatting with PD anyway.

Trailers are no big deal back home. Everybody and their brother has one. No registration is required. I walked into Tractor Supply and they rang it up like any other purchase. Got my receipt, dude unchained it from the rest of their trailers, hooked it up to my Jeep, and off I went...

My family back home are all LEOs and they said no registration was required and is optional if you really want it, but you might have to make up a VIN. Dad used his phone number to register his. I would've done the same, but it was a holiday weekend and I didn't have time to wait around. I had to get a bike out here and I was starting a new job that week. Uhaul didn't have any trailers I could take one-way. Jason suggested a trailer from Tractor Supply, and a few hours later I was on the road.

The trailer should have come with a Certificate of Origin, which is a bit like a "pink slip" - if not you can contact the seller. If TSC is Tractor Supply there is a store down in Gilroy, at 152E and 101 - right next to Sonic Burgers. They should be able to help you out.

I'm in San Diego. Gilroy is a bit of a haul. :laughing
