Tried selling a motorcycle on eBay... here's what I learned

Thanks for all your thoughts on pricing! I appreciate the objective thoughts.

Just to prove I’m not a dolt, I realized the risks when I was going into it (taking apart a clean title perfectly good motorcycle), but I also just wanted to have a go at a cool project, you know? See what I could do. And I learned a lot about my motorcycle in the process, had a lot of fun and that’s easily worth the $2K hit I’ll take, roughly. Gave me so much confidence in what I could do with googling and reading manuals!

At the time I also thought I’d keep forever what I built. I do love it, but moving this motorcycle abroad seems impractical (I am considering all my options but it’s most likely buy a 250cc dirt bike in Central America). I briefly considered sending it to my home in Australia... but I then just don’t know if I’ll be able to register it!

That said, I appreciate the forum members here who would search for an ‘unmolested’ example. I think I’ll give it one last go on eBay.

My main takeaway from eBay: You can indeed sell motorcycles and get a realistic price (maybe shockingly realistic!) and have it done in a determined time frame. I suspect the more liquid/in-demand your motorcycle, and the higher market price, the more likely it is to sell. Perhaps a late model Ducati Monster, HD Sportster or SV650, the kinds of motorcycles people like to start on because they won’t grow out of them too soon (another debate let’s not have here, I know opinions abound).

Second takeaway: The payment system is shambolic! Deposit through paypal and settlement in cash?? I always find this scary.

Third takeaway: Read the regulations on what’s covered in buyer and seller protection for eBay Motors. There are special rules for motorcycles older than 10 years old. If I were to buy, I’d definitely only buy motorcycles less than ten years old (determined by model year... so 2009 or later in 2018) for the better protection.

Thanks again. If you have more questions on the eBay process I’m happy to share.

PS thanks for the occasional compliment above. I have so much to learn here, but appreciate the encouragement for a newb.

You should put it as close to stock looking as possible. Alternatively sell as is for 2500 and sell leftover fairing parts separately. Its an old bike and now there are so many bikes in similar category

BTW, I rode demo multi 600 and 1000 back to back and 600 handled way better(in stock form). It wasnt just my opinion, 2 other guys agreed about it.
