Truck Talk - 2008 Tundra vs 2008 Silverado

the Ridgeline is built off of the Odessy van platform :barf

Mmmm...

Tundra.

sema07_tundradiesel---04.jpg

Good god that's an ugly vehicle.

What don't you like about your Tacoma?

I think it's an amazing vehicle for the price.

Toyota sucks, all japanese trucks suck compared to american ones. i have a new tacoma and its a peice of crap, toyota just rides the rumor that toyota is reliable and overcharges for its crap. i could have gotten a silverado for the price of my tacoma.

fuck toyota! if you want to throw a shitload of cash down the drain buy a tundra

I like the idea of the Honda - shorter, better mileage, and less expensive. But the Chevy seems nicer despite the cost difference and worse mileage.

Check the loading capacity of the Ridgeline and compare that to what you want to haul. It will haul two bikes in the bed - but it sits low when you put a lot of weight in the back. I saw one the other day with some concrete patio stones in the back and it was definitely low. My frontier when loaded to capacity still sat level (I had 1500lbs of concrete in the back destined for the dump + 2 adults)

My beef w/ GM is the (lack of) quality of the components for the GMT800 and the attitude of the union people that make the components and assemble the trucks; admittedly the GMT900 is a major improvement in components but I just don't see it as nice as others (I will note that Chrysler has some very dodgy parts too). You should be able to negotiate a very good deal below advertized considering they can't move them off the lot.

:shrug

I've beat the fuck out of mine.

It's had no problems.

I haul stuff like this, though.

I have a 2005 silverado but it's the 2500, not the 1500. Great performance, smooth ride, nice interior. Have had some issues with it - the CD player fucked up, the internal climate controls broke, and after the first rain, the windows always need to be lubed. Warranty covered these problems, but not a vehicle for me to drive while they fixed them. I have about 40k on it, and minor transmission slipping, but probably new fluid will correct. All-in-all, I'm pretty happy with it, but the gas mileage sucks, <15 mpg...That's for the 2500, though, I believe the 1500 gets around 18 or so.

My buddy had a tundra and the whole tranny was shit about 1,000 miles after the warranty expired...

It all comes down to brand loyalty. Many times the brand loyalty comes extended from race loyalty. A lot of ignorant white folk will swear up and down that Toyota trucks suck shit all the while having never driven one, let alone driven one for 60,000+ miles. And then they'll lie out their ass claiming they used to have a Toyota and it sucked shit, but truth is they never had one, yes I have busted people like this. On the other side, there are a lot of Asians that buy Toyotas only without test driving an American truck, believing that the Toyota is more reliable. I think both sides are ignorant if they haven't at least test driven different models in it's class.

Toyota's great reliability reputation is not a made up myth. When I was in the market for a mid sized SUV I test drove Grand Cherokee, Explorer, Trailblazer, Pathfinder, 4Runner, etc. The 4Runner just felt the best to me and after 90,000 miles in just 4 years not one thing has gone wrong with it. I drive it hard, real hard. I've driven off road, across small rivers, streams, rough snowstorms, steep incline mountains, downshifting, engine braking, over curbed islands because I didn't want to wait for a train, and I shit you not - even drifting across an intersection at high speed that I went in too hot trying to make a left turn on a just turned yellow with the traction control kicking and screaming. So yea, I am biased to Toyota, but I think when buying a new truck one should test drive all models, maybe you'll like the Chevy better for it's softer ride, and there's nothing wrong with that.

^ uhhhhh............... ooooookayyyyy............... :wtf

Hmm..... Mines the 2500HD, (06). Gas is 16mpg. That's 16, empty. With a couple of tons in the back, 16. Hauling the trailer? 16. Uphill, with a headwind, 16. Downhill with a tailwind? yup, 16. :laughing

The best I've ever gotten from mine was 15. I can drive it like an asshole and get 12-13 or like a grandma (no fun at all!) and get 15...Guess which one I do? :laughing

For curiosity's sake: Do you run 87? Also, do you have the long bed, extended cab, etc? Stock rims? I wonder if they improved the gas mileage that much in a year, or if it is because of other factors which make these trucks not identical...

It all comes down to brand loyalty.

Yeah; I cut the rest of the fluff.

Brand loyalty is crap. When I'm in the market for a new vehicle I test EVERYTHING. When shopping for my truck: I made sure I checked out all the brands (and everything else while I was out having fun - everything from the Mini to an F150). And I'm rather thorough - I noted the Mercedes Benz cars' lack of quality (even so far as checking the sealant on the seams on the trunk and doors: many seams on the Benz's had the sealant beside the seam or only half-way down the seam). IMHO: some of the best attention to detail was on the Subaru cars.

'06, 6 litre, 4spd non OD, stock steel rims, regular cab, longestmotherfuckingbed they would give me, plus a liftgate and bed armoring. I run 87. Typical work truck. The 16mpg is from memory, I could be rounding up in my head. I'm like that. I actually need to fill up tomorrow. I'll give you some good numbers then. This tank I've been hauling ass everywhere, had several loads of over 2 ton, etc. I also keep my tires, (commercial tires), at 50psi.

Regardless, a mile or two either direction, the fuel economy sucks. :laughing

Racism in vehicle choice? This one's a first for me! Now I've seen it all...weren't our grandfathers the last of that generation?

954rider, Toyota's US made truck line along with woes of becoming largest manufacturer have lead to a haven of quality control issues. Recalls were up over 300% from 2005 to 2006. Things aren't always peachy at the top. Owning one Toyota truck makes not an expert, just another real world opinion. I've owned two Toyotas. Currently, we own 22 Ford, Chevy and Dodge trucks. We'd try Toyota if not for the fact there isn't a one ton version of them.

Yeah, if you take the bumper off a new E-class, it no longer has that collapsible foam surrounding all the structural components. It's sad what they've come to in order to stay competitive with Japan.

yo, my company has discounts on GM/ford/etc vehicles (S-plan, etc), I think its nearly that time where friends and family can use that discount.

pm and i'll look into it for you.

They all use imported parts from the lowest bidder. I don't see a lick of difference for supporting local industry by buying one over the other if it's not in your town. Heck: we've got a Toyota plant in town here and they're building another Toyota plant 30mins down the road - does that make Toyota an import? Not in my mind.

Great way to look at it.

My opinion.... *(I've always had S-10's, Tacoma's, and Rangers).

Rangers were always work trucks, we could NEVER get more then 170K out of one, without a "signifigant" failure (read as timing chain, head gaskets, oil pump, transmission, rear ends).

S-10, the 2.8L "tahoe" package extended cab pile I had for 250K before if blew the transmission. It was only on it's second clutch, 3rd brake job, 2nd pitman arm and 1st replacement balljoint in the front end. This truck got me through senior year in HS, first 2 years of work, college, and lets beat the shit out of my truck. Also used a set of helper springs to throw 1200 pounds in the bed, and 2800 pounds on a trailer and hauled it cross town, twice.
Lasted well it did... Guy I sold it to put in a new tranny *(T-5 5speed), and last I heard it turned 400k!

The Toyota's I had all 3 were 22R engines both carb'd and "E" fuel injection models. You keep those bastards running well, and you get 300k out of those babies NO problemo. To the pompus jack ass touting about "race" reasons for toyota sucking... Explaing the LACK of 4L V6 cylinder heads... You over heat those damn engines just one bit and POP.. Bad head gasets, warped heads. Don't believe me, go ask a few mechanics about 4Runner cylinder heads. I'll give toyota credit for having balls and slapping "TRD" on things. Now we know they are TuRDs

That's because Toyota was cheap and used a cast-iron block with an aluminium head.
The VQ40 tromps the Toyota V6. :cool

But honestly; I don't put much mileage on my 4-wheeled vehicles so long-term reliability isn't on my radar: I care more about fit and finish and fear cheap components that will fail within 3-4 years. My old Chevy, however, was in the dealership 12 times the first year for warranty repairs.
