US Flag Etiquette on My Motorcycle

Aris, have you thought about mounting something like a pvc pipe that you could mount semi-permanently, and then put the flag in that during the day for the ride? That way you can leave the 'mount' on the bike and have the flag in when you want.

Actually, mounting a small 6"x9" flag on my bike is really easy. I can just slip it on the radio antenna. So, putting it on and off is really easy for me.

For full-sized flags that I would use in parades, I'm working on putting together a little mount that plugs into the 1" hitch receiver that is on the back of my bike. It's just too crazy to ride at freeway speeds with a full-sized flag on the bike. The Goldwing is enough of a sail in the wind as it is.

How many service members have actually died defending the flag in the last, I dunno, 70 years? Come off it already. Korea wasn't an invasion of U.S. soil and neither was Vietnam or Iraq or Afghanistan. We had no clear enemy in the Middle East other than "terrorism". Fighting for U.S. interests abroad is not the same thing as being invaded and "protecting the flag".

I believe the American flag deserves the utmost respect, but I'm really tired of people making all service members out to be some ultimate hero just because they did some time in the desert et al.

Aren't there mounts currently made for Wings? I see the Patriot Guard riders on Wings with them all the time. :dunno

I really loathe when people do that. I'm firmly convinced they don't understand what they're doing when they do that. Being politically butthurt is not enough to fly the flag upside down.

Yup, I can buy one for $200, but I prefer to make one for $10. I'm just looking for an excuse to bust out the wire-feed welder in my garage. :teeth

Agreed, I did 4 years, and certainly do not think I am / did anything special.

The flag represented someting great at one time...today not so much.

Display it however you want...the people we hire to defend and protect our constitution (elected leaders) don't seem to give a fuck so...

One thing I know for sure...people LOVE symbols!

I would try to explain to you what that means, but your posts on BARF indicate that you have zero mental capacity to understand it.

i know exactly, explicitly and specifically what it means.

I definitely don't want the wrath of asthmodeus following me around, but perhaps he feels that the current state of the US is such that it is indeed in peril? And since it's an avatar on an internet forum, it's a quick way to voice his opinion, and not actually a call for assistance in the immediate space/time continuum?

Probably not the same thing as someone actively disrespecting the flag.

I received a patient on my hospital ward one afternoon. He was quite elderly with very old tattoos on his forearms. The style lead me to believe he was a sailor, so I asked.
He said he was in the navy many years ago. I thanked him for his service.
We talked about it for a while and the whole time he looked out the window.
It was a beautiful afternoon. The sun was shining and our large American flag waved in the breeze under a deep blue sky.

After a short silence, the old sailor quietly expressed he feared he was dying. He was brought literally to tears knowing that "Old Glory" might be the last thing he viewed.
