Visit to Portland

Ah Portland. I first worked for Intel there 20 years ago. I often thought i would move back, but i never could pull the trigger. Back in 2002 or 03 or so, I remember looking at some 4,000+ square foot custom built mansions with views and amazing custom wood work throughout the entire house for 600's! As a windsurfer, i should have bought that house in Hood River (heaven on earth) when it could be had for 200's!

At the time, the main difference for me between the northwest and bay area is the lack of diversity. It would be me and a bunch of white folk. I was visiting this summer and realized every service worker was white, even at Subway!

^ hah it tripped me out when I saw white people driving the bus there.

one thing I gotta say about Portland that edges over SF is their chill vibe. never felt like people were snooty anywhere I went.

I was visiting Portland recently, I drove an hour to McMinville and saw the Spruce Goose. Great airplane museum. The Frozen waterfalls are incredible this time of year too on the way to visit the Cascade Locks.

+1 on the suicide girl strippers at Devil's Point.
Also liked McNenamin's, the various street food pods, the museum at the university, Powell's Books, the Japanese Garden, and just the mellow atmosphere of the town. Lotsa cute lesbians, too, which doesn't hurt a bit. ;)

Depends, there are plenty of azn's up there. No blacks though. But it's still more diverse than average america.

Those aren't azns. Those are people squinting at the glare coming off all the other white people.

Hey Matt,

Didn't read the whole thread, so sorry if someone posted this.. we went a few months ago and purchased a Distillery Row passport. You get a bunch of mom and pop distilleries, a winery (which might have moved to Napa or at least it was in the process a few months ago) and a bar with a hell of a lot of cider. It was a great $20 spent. We had a really good time just chatting with the locals and supporting small business.

Don't have too much to ad other than....
was traveling there for work and always rented a car and drove AROUND downtown. The freeways suck there. Then one time I decided to try the rail from the airport and stay downtown. Best thing I ever did. Downtown has a nice vibe to it and Pioneer Square is filled with food trucks offering up some great cuisine. Lots of micro brews to be tried as previously mentioned. It's a hipster kind of place, but the downtown feels so small and accessible compared to a place like NY NY that it makes it very comfortable feeling.

Had some friends sold everything and moved into a loft downtown and never left the core for over 2 years and enjoyed living there very much. Only reason they left is their 2 years in one place were up and they moved to try Barcelona Spain for 2 years :)
