Visor color comparison

I would agree with the mirrore visor it works great during day light hours blocks the sun really well...and u can use it at night if u had too...all though its not legal. Id say the amber lense will make everthing brighter just like the amber goggles do.

An amber shield improves contrast. Unbeatable on overcast days.

Yellow tint for the foggy and cloudy days is my favorite.
The mirror shields have a light tint and seem to cut some glare down.

i notice the mirror ones have a pretty dam bad reflection when u ride towards the sun.

does this happen with dark smoke?

Totally disagree. I switched from a dark tint to a mirror shield on my Arai, because it is better in a wider variation of light. No need for sunglasses and I can use it at night in a pinch. Could never do that with my dark tint.

'Not sure what you disagree about. Semantics? I say they suck, you say you can use it "in a pinch". I take that to mean, you're not totally blind but your vision is compromised.

There's the rub. ANY tinted or mirrored shield is going to reduce your ability to see at night. Period. I don't think anyone's going to dispute that. So why use a tinted or mirrored shield if you're riding at night? Because you want to be fashionable during the day? That's fine, but I'd carry a clear shield with me so I can swap it out when the light goes.

I'd much rather forego a bit of fashion than not be able to see the ratty pickup truck with it's headlights off at night and a drunk at the wheel pulling out into your lane from a side street or driveway.

light smoke/mirrors are very similar in terms of tint. both are usable at night :)

unless you dont eat enough carrots :B

Useable? Yea, I suppose. Is your vision compromised? You bet. I'd rather be able to see that bozo pulling out from a driveway on a dark street, or that bit of debris on the freeway in front of me that if I hit it, will send me into a tank slapper.

I've got a dark smoke shield on my Shoei, and I like it a lot for daytime riding, but I agree that it's completely unsafe for night time riding. Any time I'm riding and there's even a possibility I might be out after dark I'll throw the clear shield in the tank or tail bag. However, for daytime riding I like the dark shield much better than wearing sunglasses. It's more comfortable for me without the sunglasses in the helmet (though I'm sure there are helmets that accomodate glasses better than mine), and it also cuts down heat inside the helmet and on my face. Never tried a mirrored visor so I can't comment on whether those are better/worse than a dark smoke one.

I just use a clear and take coffee and wipe it all over when I need tint. This way I can control how much tint I need at any given rest stop.

Yup, that's how it's always worked for me. The harder it is to see my face, the better my chances. :cry

I thought dark shields were for when you drop your bike..

Nobody can see your eyes wide with embarrassment. :laughing

Why mirror the visor when you can mirror your entire helmet..! :thumbup

Lol ok maybe I wasn't clear or the point got lost in the thread, but at least some pics got posted, but please take a pic from inside the helmet looking out to show the effect of the color/tint

And also I notice that my old blue mirror amplified light a bit and was better at night (in well lit city streets) than my silver mirror visor, which is terrible.

With no street lights, I wouldn't wear a dark tint visor at night.

Seriously dude. Get the dark tint visor that you want and carry a spare clear visor in a stowaway visor carrier. You shouldn't be riding at night with a tinted visor anyway..! Period... :eboy

^^ I got one like this for free in some Eropean moto magazine... :ride

There is no way you can say you won't wear a dark visor where there isn't any street lights. Street lights aren't everywhere. That's like saying you will only wear a condom with diseased chicks. :laughing

Bit of a side question - how are amber shields at night?

My point was a mirror shield is MUCH BETTER at night than a dark smoke shield. I have no trouble riding at night with my mirrored shield and I can't with dark tint. Therefore, I can have one shield for all light conditions rather than having to switch my shield. I also prefer the view through the mirror shield. Still cuts the sun and the glare, but gives a brighter, clearer view than dark smoke.

I like dark smoke.

Mirrored ones Ive had left reflections inside in a lot of situations. Admittedly, I haven't tried an Arai mirrored. I did notice a huge improvement in the sheild optical quality when I got the Aria. The dark smoke kicks ass.

Unfortunately, my nancy-boy eyes are so thensitive that anything less then dark smoke on a bright summer Ca day will have my eyes watering and squinting. Of course, it does suck at night and should not be used at night. I carry clear glasses and wear them if stuck out at night. Been caught without those and its dangerous.

Can't do sunglasses under the shield. Makes me sick feeling.

Mostly yellow :|
Obviously the visibility won't be as good as it is with a clear shield, but it's serviceable in a pinch. I wouldn't plan for a night ride with the amber shield.

How about on sunny days up in the shady twisties...it would seem mirror is perfect there whereas dark could be a little too dark to see if the shadows are hiding some wet pavement...can anyone confirm or deny this suspicion? Thx

Something to consider... one of my helmets is a Shark RSI. The clear visor is the best visor I've ever seen on a helmet period. 20+ years with every major brand. The thing is optically great and water condenses on it before it fogs. Since the visors are so easy to swap, I bought a tinted one with a metallic/reflective blue looking surface. Optically it's just as good as the clear, and I love it, but it fogs like a bastard on colder winter mornings; nowhere near as good as the clear in that regard.
