VW "Clean" Diesel not really clean

if VWs were made in china the offending code monkeys and their immediate manager would have been executed.

Soooo......current diesel owners will have to what? Take car in and get software updated?

Wouldn't mine trading in my 40k 2013 tdi wagon for newer one.

What for? How have owners been harmed?

ehicle owners will suffer loss of vehicle value due to Volkswagen’s future recalls and degrading of performance characteristics such as horsepower and fuel efficiency in order to make vehicles meet EPA standards.

So they're speculating future harm, without proof of said harm. Good luck with that. :laughing

And even if their car's performance/efficiency will be harmed, how do they know that VW won't give them some sort of incentive in exchange?

They designed a cheat program for that too. You didn't actually get 48.1 MPG. :twofinger

They accidentally moved the decimal place over :laughing

Honestly, this scam is (was) genius. I wonder how the regulation actually reads, might be some super ninja lawyer loop hole shit.

So my 2013 passat after the last ecu update in 2014 when this was first brought up dropped a solid 3-4mpg hand calculated. And started to go through regen cycles more often while also an increased use of DEF. So it did effect the car one of the reasons we traded it in for the 15. I never thought this would happen. I wonder if this is a reason so many turbos and exhaust flapper valves went south. So much restriction that they overheated?

I bet the owners are the ones who discovered it, then they told the EPA, who begged them to hold off on their lawsuit until after the EPA announced it so they could act like they discovered it. :laughing

I drove diesel Golfs for over 25 years (first one was technically a Dasher) and only made my most recent purchase a MINI to please my wife (she's the one who drives it, anyway).

So as a longtime fan of the brand, this douche attempt at trickery really disappoints me.

If there's a bright side to this, I'll finally have an excuse for an APR tune after the recall restricts the engine.

Damn! Is that what's gonna happen? Owners get a check for the premium we paid for diesel but then a recall software update kills gas mileage and performance??

48.1 MPG Diesel is energy equivalent to ~42 MPG Gas, which is also called MPGe, so even if VW was not cheating, the energy efficiency of diesel is not as good as people think because diesel has more energy per gallon. :nerd:nerd

Diesel also has more oil and pollution per gallon.

The concern is that the emissions system cannot support full time use.

There are expensive components of the emissions system on the 2.0 that fail around the 100k mark. If they are under increased load, the failure time may be ridiculously short.

That will screw customers pretty well.

VW stock fell 20% since the news and 45% over the last 6 months.

Tesla is up and nearing its all time high.

Diesel is MUCH more efficient when you're stuck in traffic a lot, when there is no load on the engine (i.e. you are not moving) it takes far less fuel to keep the engine turning over than a gas engine.

All true, that was probably part of the equation when they decided to put in this cheat, it would have lowered the cost to build.

VW doesn't give a shit about this. NOx in the atmosphere catalytically produces ozone, and contributes to particulate matter to a huge degree. One could actually estimate their contribution to the number of deaths and incidence of respiratory disease caused by particulate matter and ozone. Just a matter of time till that study comes out...
