the reason there are no more unicorns is because the chinese believe that powdered unicorn horn is a multipurpose aphrodisiac, boner enhancer, penis enlarger and makes it 20% more likely to have a male baby.
 
That gutter oil is some serious shit.

For those not in the know, there are people who steal raw sewage and boil it down until it turns into oil, which street vendors then use to cook food.

They recycle cooking oil from the Sewer in Shanghai.

I have see it with my own eyes when I went there. Some lady in the middle of the road pulled up a man hole cover in traffic and was ladling cooking oil off the top of the sewer runoff.

Yum.

Regardless, I do have respect for China. If you go over there, there transportation infrastructure is much better than American Cites with all things considered.

The worst thing that happened to China's roads is the private automobile with one driver in it.

I never saw any behavior that was that risky.

They're just going through what the US went through in the 1800's. There are reasons we have such (supposedly) stringent rules about handling meat. Pasturizing milk is due to one plant refusing to remove infected cows from it's milking lines.
 
i'll be bringing my own food ... Larabars .. with me if i ever decide to visit china.

Gutter oil is a term used in China to describe illicit cooking oil which has been recycled from waste oil collected from sources such as restaurant fryers, sewer drains, grease traps and slaughterhouse waste. Reprocessing is often very rudimentary; techniques include filtration, boiling, refining and the removal of adulterants. Another version of gutter oil uses discarded animal parts, animal fat and skins, internal organs, and expired or otherwise low-quality meat which is then cooked in large vats in order to extract the oil.

Gutter oil has been shown to be very toxic, and can cause diarrhea and abdominal pain. There are also reports that long-term consumption of the oil can lead to stomach and liver cancer as well as developmental disabilities in newborns and children. Testing of some samples of gutter oil have revealed traces of Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH), a dangerous organic pollutant capable of causing cancer with long-term consumption. There is also potential for gutter oil to contain Aflatoxins, highly carcinogenic compounds produced by certain molds. Zeng Jing of the Guangdong Armed Police Hospital said about gutter oil "Animal and vegetable fat in refined waste oil will undergo rancidity, oxidation and decomposition after contamination, and produce toxic substances such as arsenic. It will cause indigestion, insomnia, liver discomfort and other symptoms"
