<warning, informational> A Word about Motor Oil.

Then there's the time I thought it would be a good idea to put Slick 50 in my '91 ZX6...:laughing

I put "motor honey' in my 1974 XL100 dirtbike when i was 13 years old, to increase compression, and it made the cam chain fly off. :laughing

Yes and no. For years, Honda cars with manual transmissions have used and call for regular motor oil. (The clutch is still dry, of course.) When I had a 5 speed Accord, and since the change interval wasn't all that often, I used motorcycle specific full synthetic motor oil in the transmission. 10/40. After 125,000 miles it still shifted like new.

There may be other small car manual transmissions out there that use motor oil, but I'm not sure.

Sorry, I meant share the same lubricant at the same time. Your motorcycle motor oil is also the transmission oil. In cars, the systems are independent in terms of lubricants.

Mobil 1
15W-50
API - SM,SL,SJ,CF

suitable for use in high-performance turbo-charged, supercharged gasoline and diesel multi-valve fuel injected engines

...certainly not obsolete by API standards. but, you do have a dry clutch.

No, I do not have a dry clutch. I have a wet clutch. API SM, SL, SJ all meet or exceed SG standards. The Mobil 1 15w50 does not contain friction modifiers (it's not energy conserving) so it's one of my choices. During my last oil change, that's exactly what my bike received.

As you've stated, the fact that's it's synthetic isn't the problem. It's that "Energy Conserving" bit that is the culprit.

right... got it. nor is it the API rating that really matters. ultimately.

"Some SM oils may also meet the latest ILSAC specification and/or qualify as Energy Conserving."

Oh, I figured you meant that. I more or less put that out there as an interesting tidbit. Many people have no idea that motor oil is used in automotive transmissions. I know I was surprised when we bought the car and it came time for a fluid change.

Ah....this thread is degenerating nicely. As all oil threads should.

I change my oil all the time.

The (free from my sponsor) Repsol Synthetic 4t gets drained out of the 1000RR engine in the F1 sidecar into clean gallon water jugs through a coffee filter when I do the oil between each race...

...and yes you guessed it, goes right back into the Ducati, Sarah's GB500, and the Subaru.

Hell if I'm going to toss out perfectly good hardly used expensive-ass oil. :teeth

your Subaru is not worthy. :hail

Up next, chain cleaning and WD-40, can it be done?

Followed closely by chain o-ring composition and how to remove one without a chain cutter.........
