so
a friend has an old goldwing that was abandoned in her custody, i'm pretty sure she has the title so clearing up paperwork wouldn't concern me. her recollection is that it's a 1978 and that's where the detail ends.

i'm thinking that if it just needs refreshing i'd like to get hold of it on the cheap. i know it'll need tires, fluids flushed/changed, tuneup etc. hasn't run in 6 years or so.

since she's a friend i don't want to steal it from her either, so what's it worth? there isn't much to go from on craigslist, haven't thoroughly searched ebay and with this age blue books will be even more useless than normal.

so, where do i find out about old goldwings?

The first thing to do is look inside the fuel tank with a flashlight. Those older Wings have the tank under the seat and they are prone to rusting in a big way, especially when they sit. If it's rusted, look for a new tank- you may find they're no longer available. If it's not rusted, you're most likely looking at a carburetor teardown/cleaning.

I had a 78 that had been sitting but was in servicable shape for $400 with a little carb cleaning tuning and cleaning it ran great it had 55k miles on it. all it cost me was plugs and an oil change. this bike was very clean as far as the paint and chrome went. I sold it for $600 and it ran so good the guy who bought it for his son left his 2005 hd sit and rode the old wing the son never got the bike.

alan is there a fuel pump involved or plain gravity feed? if the tank is junk and NLA maybe something could be substituted

the fuel pump appears to be a mechanical one, not married to the fuel tank so that's good, now to find frank and harass him on PMs...

Voice of experience, the most expensive bike to own is the free one!

:twofinger

GL with that, give us updates.

Don't know a whole lot about the old wings, but isn't a 78 model before they started putting the big fairings on them?

If the tank is only lightly rusted, you can get a special interior epoxy based coating treatment that's specifically made for motorcycle tanks.

My understanding is that those bikes were pretty reliable. But that the charging system was pretty anemic. I think there may be some upgrades available for them. Stator as well as VRR.

Ever seen one fixed up as a cafe racer? I'll try to find some pix somewhere.

i have a free bike in the garage too.... it's not getting resurrected for that reason exactly.

fairings would be aftermarket on this one, and it has them, i don't know if it has the hard bags. apparently they were marketed as touring bikes from teh get go, but weren't sold ready to hit the highways (bags, fairings etc etc) till 1980 or a little earlier

WHAT? a honda with charging system issues, you don't say!!! :laughing

pics of old wings as cafe racers is what piqued my interest actually, even just as a standard configuration i like the look.

the unfortunate thing i found out with this bike is that not only has it been sitting for 6 years it hasn't been registered in at least that long either. :sad i'll have to see what the back fees look like before commiting to it.

I sent you a PM about info on the old bike.
About the DMV. Wait 7 years and you'll only have to pay current reg. What's that? like one more year?

I believe vehicles fall out of the system after 5 years, so the fees should be negligible.

i thought it was 10 years to get expunged from DMV... in any case i'll be checking

nedro, thanks for the referral

I have successfully resurected title in my name on a free-to-a-good home craigslist bike.

hoops to jump thru, etc.

So it is possible.

Now if I could only get the engine-with-a-sparkplug-tip-shaped-canyon-down-the-number-one-cylider-wall-no-compression-havin' motor to run.

OK, here's some pix. The first two are a bike that used to be owned by a guy I know.

yeah, that's what i like

everyone seems to have been wrong about how long it takes for the DMV to forget about a vehicle. 4 years it seems

http://www.dmv.ca.gov/vr/checklists/no_record.htm

just noticed both the bikes have the same goofy exhaust tip, i do not condone that :laughing
