What’s wrong with my computer?

You’re right.
The power cord has a brick in the middle of it.

Could that be the issue? OMG maybe that’s what’s wrong.

I’m going back to the computer repair shop and ask.
Could very well be the problem!

Just dropped it off to check the brick idea. He’ll check it out and call me tomorrow.

Kinda wonder why he didn’t think of this yesterday. Oh well.

Seems pretty obvious once it’s pointed out.

We’ll see.

I've had more than a couple of those compact power converters go bad on me over the years, that's why I asked about it.

Is it plugged into a surge protector? Universal power supply?

No, check out post #17.

The repair guy I went to said the power supply is integrated with the motherboard on my computer and he couldn’t guarantee not breaking the screen if he tried to replace it.
It’s not modular.

I think that’s a flaw with AIO’s but I’m no computer guy.

I’m a cheapskate at heart so believe me, if there was a way to repair the old one I would have done it.

I don’t pick up the new computer until Wednesday so I can still back out but fixing my old computer looks like a lost cause at this point.

Yeah, AIO's have always seemed like ineffective fuckjobs to me, so maybe that is the case. I honestly don't know how they are built, that sounds like a terrible design.

Nevertheless, I am assuming you can pull what is probably a SSD from in there to get your data back?

I really hope that repair guy is free. His opinion doesn’t seem to be worth more.

Well, it was worth something. His opinion is basically that any attempt to repair this laptop is a high probability money loser for him, with a high risk of a pissed off customer!

Which is probably correct, but was gently delivered in techno mumbo jumbo since you can't actually say that to the customer.

Yeah, I’m not pleased with the guy’s approach.

Anyway, he agrees now it IS the power supply brick that went poof and a new one has been ordered.
I’ll have it back tomorrow by noon.

Based on my interactions with the repair guy I’ll believe it it when I see turn on.

Luckily Best Buy had to order my new computer and it won’t be delivered until tomorrow so they haven’t charged my card yet.
Once I see my old computer boot up I’ll cancel with BB.

If this works out you guys saved my ass from spending a lot of money I didn’t need to spend.

I’ll report back tomorrow with the final outcome.

Well I’m fucked. The repair shop guy was certain it was the brick in the power cord.
He ordered a new power cord, plugged it in and nada. Not the answer like he (and we) thought.

I nearly cancelled my new computer at BB yesterday.Glad now I didn’t.

What a journey. I’m actually looking forward to a fresh new computer.
And they had it on a deep sale discount so at least there’s that.

I owe everyone here a drink.

Seriously, order this from amazon and try it yourself

Get all the bits out of the old one you can, install them in the new one then go all office space printer scene on the old one.
And stop downloading pr0n.

It's really odd that
1. They didn't test the power supply first.
2. Have a way to testing with power either with spare power supplies or with a machine to do it. They are supposed to be a computer repair service, not a computer replacement service.

My low opinion of the geek squad is even lower.

Testing power supply is the first thing you do. This is basic A+ exam stuff. Very Sus.
