What bike to get to practice wheelies and sh*t?

I don't own a truck, and live probably 45 minutes from dirt. See my post above—for probably $1200-$1500 you can get a small dirt bike and a hitch carrier and go nuts. Or get a small dirt bike and use a Ziptruck now and then.

Shit, I'm almost that far from CM and I just ride the plated dirtbike up there, non-dot nobbies and all. Plated is the way to go. You can run enduro tread or full nobs (or sumo 17's) and play around in empty lots, industrial areas and just have a good ol time in general. All this talk about "you have to take it to the dirt" is silly. The dirt is just the icing on the cake

I'm with you, man. Just pointing out that the dirt-only thing can get done for cheap as hell too. Bonus is that when you eat shit a bunch of times and your bike is all bent up, you don't have to ride it home. Which I've done, too. :teeth

What ever Mr. Smuggo.., I travel pretty damned far myself to all the events and before I had a working truck I rode there, I still ride to events when I'm not riding my own bike.

Trade a bike for a truck... it's not that hard to get a truck.. please. And stop your whining, you choose to live in SF.

Is this a smuggy SF thing we have going on here? Do you guys somehow feel this entitlement to be even more smug than a French pregnant woman because you pay stupid high rent?

:laughing What the hell, over?

I must be the only person on BARF who doesn't live next door from Rich Oliver and who doesn't own a truck. The cost of buying and supporting a vehicle capable of carrying said dirt bike is prohibitive as f%*k.

You know how many track days I can do on a street bike before it adds up to buy a truck/van + renting a large enough garage in SF? They charge $25 per DAY for truck parking here. Instead of a truck, I could just buy a stunt bike.

Not everyone lives in SF, and the vast majority of people don't ride to a trackday :wtf

And apparently you're not aware that people are allowed to ride dirt bikes at places without paying Rich Oliver and Brian Bartlow to instruct them. Do you do private sessions with Ken Hill at every trackday?

Smug Tharkûn is smug! :laughing

so move......

or get a hitch for your existing vehicle and a $300 folding harbor freight trailer.

My existing vehicle has 2 wheels, too.

This isn't about smug. Sure I could move to the middle of nowhere and ride the dirt, but dirt isn't the only thing. I also like having a job. And jobs are in SF.

@angelsndevils: that was pretty much my plan, a small, plated dirt bike you could potentially put street tires on. Seems there isn't much in the plated division below 400cc.

OP, I have plenty of dirt bikes (100cc to 650cc). Hit me when we have prepped them for winter riding next month and you can come out for the day on me. I'll be happy to go over the basics in the dirt with you.

:ride

.

Papi, isn't that a dirt bike in your avatar? El Mirage and Bonneville are pretty much dirt tracks, are they not?

Dude—have you spent any time on Craigslist or manufacturer websites/dealerships researching this yourself? If you're looking for a smaller dual sport that's relatively inexpensive and not nice enough to care about (which seems to be your requirements, although it's hard to tell) there are a LOT of options from the last 10-15 years: CRF230L, DR350, XT250, KLX... literally every Japanese manufacturer has (or has had) at least one entry in this market. It isn't hard to find these, and that's not even including premium stuff like the WR250X (or R) which I mentioned earlier in this same thread, or older stuff like XLs which were mentioned by others.

Thanks. I did actually spend time looking at both manufacturer's websites and CL. But most people here seem to be recommending 400 or 450 bikes. I did look for the WR250X, but that seems rare and more expensive than a DRZ400.

Looks like the Honda XR and Suzuki DR have some older, cheaper low CC models. I'll look into that.

Um, read original post much? I do exactly want to walk before I run, which is why I'm looking for a sub 400cc displacement bike. How did I not make that clear?

That it is. :laughing
OP wont be allowed to touch those bikes. :x

You are welcome to swing a leg over my little 250 2-stroke. I can almost guarantee that you won't hurt the bike. No guarantees the other way around, though. :laughing

The wr250 really isn't all that different than a drz and they are indeed more expensive. It isn't really going to be very different for practicing wheelies... Although I did test ride a friends and popped a wheelie on accident. He had his clutch adjust way far out compared to my dizzer and boop then lol.

I had always heard to practice riding a wheelie on a bicycle first since the balance is pretty much the same.

Otherwise just get a little mini bike. We had two little 80 2 smokes last time I was at hollister and we were wheeling those all over the place.

yeah, that's probably the only bike I would NOT recommend practicing wheelies on !

me personally ? I cannot count the number of get-offs I've had on a 250 2 stroke motocross bike :laughing

I've watched more than a few biff it trying to wheelie on one, and I don't even try. Yes, sometimes the front comes up, but trust me, I'm busy doing my best to get it back down
