What kind/brand of motor oil do you use?

Mobil1 15W50 car oil without moly.
BTW, Redline is known to have a lot of moly. Only energy saving car oils have more.

been using Motul E-Tech 100 (10w40) on my R1

thinking about changing to Motul 300v Factory (5w40)

I use Shell Rotella-T Synthetic 5W/40 (blue bottle). $13/gallon from Wal-Mart, other places it's $5/quart. It's a commercial truck oil. No friction modifiers (like molybdenum) to screw with the clutch, no lessened ZDDP requirements from the EPA. No added costs of a "motorcycle oil". :cool

What year, make, and model of bike are you writing about?
How technical do you want to get? Heck, change your oil every 200 miles and you'll be fine with whatever you choose. :teeth

I have an 03 Honda 600RR. I'll probably spend the latter part getting used to her for now. But eventually I'll just use her for the twisties, commuting, and maybe an occasional track day.

Is it better to switch to a heavier or lighter oil for the track? I figure I can't go wrong once I go with synthetic after the break in.

I had a Kawi ZX6R that I used to feed her everything from 1040 to 2050. And with my new steed I'd rather be mindful of what I pour into her.

These are some great responses by everyone and I thank you all for your inputs!!!:teeth :teeth

I've been using Golden Spectro 10W40 for five or six years. When I went to Cycle Gear this week to do an oil change they didn't have any so I got Castrol Actevo. It was cheaper by two bucks a quart. I have always used Castrol in my aircooled VW and never any issues but I don't think the brand or makeup is as important as keeping it clean ie.(good filter and frequent changes). As for weight I always follow the owners manual.

Be careful... Castrol is known for misadvertising their Group III processed petroleum-based oils and calling them synthetic... Mobil had a lawsuit against Castrol, and an arbitrator decided for Castrol. Group III oils are cheaper than true synthetics to make, and while they have properties close to synthetics when heated, they're not close at cold start-ups.

Tho after the lawsuit was settled, even Mobil 1 has switched to using some Group III oils in their old PAO-only Mobil 1's to lower costs (but notice they still sell them at the same prices?). Mobil 1's motorcycle oils are still all PAO, afaik.

Have no idea what any of the other brands actually use as their base oils... I bet that other manufacturers also switched to using Group IIIs and calling it "Synthetic."

Note that Honda oils are only "semi-synthetic", so less than 30% of the oil is Group III or PAO. The rest is probably Group I crap. Note that they don't sell a full-synthetic. I have a funny feeling that Honda's best interest is not in keeping every engine running as long as it could......

hey do you guys know if Cycle Gear gets a kick back from Motorex. Everytime I got there they try to sell me that shit. I listened to them the first time and the polish they sold me leaves streaks everywhere. and just the other day I needed to change oil on my bikes and could get into the dealer soon enough to get the good stuff, HOnda synthetic blend, so I went to go get some Motul 5100 cause I heard good things about them, and once I out that on the shelf the manager goes nutz..."what the hell are you getting that for?" I never tried it so he went back to the shelf and grabbed the Motorex. I asked if it was synthetic and he said yes. IF its supposed to be synthetic, would they put it on the jug? I think they get that crap for really cheap considering how much they have on the shelves. I couldnt believe I let him sell me that regular motoroil at a synthetic blend price... screw that and Cycle Gear.

PS...I still get my tires there...hehe

whatever...sticking with HOnda next time

mobil one is that a car oil , most impotant stick with bik oils and for instance i like 10/40 quick response. unlike other most use 20/50 slower response throtle control . im not an enginer but maybe slower throtle control more horse power and thiner oil might get a better top end. my bik rev alot faster with light oil low miles cool wether bay are not to hot dont feel the need for 20/50 . or expensive synthetic never go back to conventional heavy on the wallet although you due feel the diffrence and most oil is recycled motorcycle oil ask they have additives for your clutch, stator certain moving parts i cant belive i ounce use car oil . as long ass you dont follow that fool that used vegtable oil burned and blew his rods pistions. boiling point

Mobil 1 MX-4T is a 10w-40 motorcycle specific synthetic oil. Don't understand the rest of your response/question.

Mike

motul 3000 semisythetic. bike has 34,000 miles from me and still runs like a champ.

I use Amsoil 10W-40 for motorcycles. Has 1,000 miles on it and the oil is still yellow. I dont plan to change it for another 5,000...

kendall 4 stroke 20w50 ... use kendall in all my vehicles for years..
great stuff holds up well to fuel dilution and is slick!!
(dont use it on new engine, rings will take forever to seat!)
going to use it in the harley also...
about $1.75 a qt.. in case lots...
dont think the brand matters as much as how often its changed...

This is really a (insert adjective here) post. Do you really believe you can tell the difference between 10/40 oil vs. 20/50 oil by the seat of your pants while riding? What are you using to time how quick your bike revs? What is the difference in time (just a silly claim to make)? You say "Most" oil is used motorcycle oil. Do you have even the foggiest idea of what the word "most" means? How many motorcycles are on the road? How many cars are on the road? Do the math. We will even ignore the fact that there are not any specific recycle containers for recycled motorcycle oil. All used motor oil goes into the same bin at Kragen so how do they find this motorcycle oil to recycle? I have a hard time believing someone could possibly believe those words as they wrote them (shaking my head in disbelief).
