What's the f-ing big deal about LDS?

I suddenly have an interest in learning about LDS from a maverick female.

Uh, OK, ya know, what I find interesting are people such as yourself whom take other peoples belief systems so personal that you become so vitriol toward them, with such hate in your speech. Seriously why are you so angry, hateful and spiteful toward anyone who finds a way to make themselves a better person? A lot of people with such disdain and hate like how you protray yourself, end up like Paul of Tarsus.. How do you feel about AA using a Higher power to quit and stay sober?

Just saying

Humm
I always thought vegans were just retarded :wow

Hmmmmm......

I actually take nothing as history, history is not a science, its simply a point of view masqueraded as fact. I take that into everything hisotrical dopcument and book that I read.

"History" as we know it is simply the tip of the iceberg known as historiography.

...and I will fight to the death for your right to wear them!

Worn today- and no one was harmed or died in the wearing of the fuchsia pink push-up bra! :laughing
But thanks for having my back! Or, wait... is that my front? ;)

My Dad (an historian) always used to say, "History is written by the victors." So take it with a grain of salt.

i just wanna hangout with the religious ones that believe ufos are gonna take them away...

that'd be some good beer stories...

OP, I've had the exact same experience. Some of the nicest, down to earth, genuinely good people I've ever met. I think the religion is wacked, but they're generally good people.

I'm still waiting for my re-enactment. :cry

Hold on, comrade, I'm rollin' on over on my knee scooter...:laughing
Got any friends who might want to play "sister wives?"

Seriously, on the micro level very nice, earnest, family-oriented people, even if I don't like their macro-level politics. And within very narrow bounds (het marriage), they are much more sex positive than most other forms of christianity, or islam.

Dude it's religion. Somewhere in the process, they want your money. It's big business cashing in on the gullible.

Yep, 10% of your earnings, minimum.

That's a requirement of members. 10% of all your earnings to the church. If you've even seen a Mormon temple, they're not hurting for cash, unlike some of their members.

I went with my wife to the Santa Monica Temple, an $800 million (I heard that number mentioned somewhere, but I might be wrong) monstrosity on Santa Monica Blvd, and they wouldn't let me in since I wasn't a member. My wife and stepkids were. They said I could go help watch the children at the welcome center. I don't fuckin' think so! So I went to Bert's Motorcycle Mega Mall. Call me when you're done.

It's NOT a *requirement*. It's only required if you want to go to their Temple. Going to the Temple is a goal, not a mandate. Many members don't pay the full 10% and it's an honor system. The BS about providing tax returns is just that...BS. If you want to go to the Temple, you are simply asked "Do you pay a full tithe" and you answer Yes or No. People will lie to go too.

If a member is hurting for cash, the Church provides help for them by training them for a job, paying their rent if necessary, and feeding them. There really is no sinister plot to keep the members poor while some gelded clergy lords over them. They simply pay into the system when times are good, and pull from it when times are bad. And not all Mormons are well to do. Quite the contrary.

I'm going to exaggerate a bit here, but bear with me.

It seems like every other post in that thread goes something like this:

"The theology is pretty kooky, and they are socially conservative to a disconcerting degree, but every single Mormon I've ever met was a stand-up human being."

Some more eloquently than others.

What the hell is going on here? Clearly they're doing something right in raising their children. Is that something extricable from the ideology, or are they integral parts of each other?

i have no opinion one way or the other. that said, i have had some serious (serious) bad luck in utah - on numerous occasions. have been all over the US, and the world. have never experienced a phenomenon quite like it. these days, i avoid passing foot, wheel or wing in that state whenever possible.

Not exactly Mormons and not saying Mormons are child rapists. But my point is to the example of being indoctrinated in weird religious dogmas.

My mom lives in Utah, she moved to SLC in 08 and now lives in Roy because it's less.. creepy there and the town is filled with not mormon USAF folks (she marrried one of them). Basically her opinion is that she found it really fucking weird and creepy that state congress and governor were having closed down meetings with the LDS Elders. She really dislikes the creepy hivemind using money to force laws on other surrounding states. I personally thing the LDS should have it's tax exempt status revoked for doing that. Don't get to be free of government dues if you are using your money to change the laws or at least you shouldn't be.
