What's the police presence on I5 to Bakersfield?

Good luck. Try it again.

Time of day seems to make a big difference. My experience mostly matches what ScottR said unless it's before noon on a weekend. Fewer regulars and travelers out at that time, and the pace is pretty brisk.

Almost any other time and you get the clumps of traffic ScottR mentioned, and trying to blast through those makes it look like you are going much faster because the differential is larger.

While I recognize the attempt to point out irony, please tell me you don't actually believe that cops adhere to the laws they're supposed to enforce? I didn't think anyone was that naive. :teeth

IME, most of them are pretty cool about it, and they tend to have the attitude of lead/enforce by example (ie, they wouldn't give a ticket for something they would do themselves), but there are the hall monitor types too.

Doesn't protect you from instant-on or LIDAR which most of the CHP is using anyway. :twofinger

And for the love of all things holy, will those of you that keep saying "the" before the name of an interstate PLEASE KNOCK IT THE FUCK OFF! God that sounds so retarded. :laughing

ie: The 880, the I-5, the 101, the 280...you get the idea.

Actually...CHP is using KA band primarily and they are lazy and just leave it on most of the time.

More importantly, instant-on doesn't mean you will always get popped because when the CHP uses it on the vehicles in front of you, you get the warning... when was the last time you were the "only" vehicle on the road?

Laser requires them to stand outside their vehicle and get a clear aim at you... and the guys hate to stand outside their cars and play that game....and I have never seen a single one using it on "THE I5"...:twofinger

Where is written in stone that you have to be out of the vehicle in order to use laser? :wtf

Some officers do leave it on all the time, however that is counter productive. By leaving it on all of the time, it alerts all the radar detectors that are on. Therefore, I don't leave it on.

Secondly, Lidar can not shoot through glass. This does not mean that I have to be outside the car, just means the window has to be rolled down. When I work 17, I (99% of the time) sit in my car and shoot lidar. When I work 880, 85, or 101, I stand out side the car.

As for THE I5, we use airplanes too for speed enforcement.

Don't want a speeding ticket, slow down, and use the device located between your ears.

I've heard that a million times at least and I can assure you, I never once heard that being said growing up and I was raised in southern California. :twofinger

LIDAR - its undetectable and CHP is in full revenue mode. I5 is well patrolled with marked cars, unmarked cars, moto's and LIDAR operators hiding under bridges/in the bushes etc.

I got my 2nd ticket in 6 months on a "clear stretch" where I thought I would be able to spot enforecement. I was wrong (well hidden LIDAR opeartor with 2 cruisers for back-up) and now my insurance is 20% higher than it was. :thumbdown :(

One good point is that I found the CHP to be reasonable in writing me up for a signifricant diascount from the speed I was actually doing :thumbup I guess they want us on the road delivering revenue through future fines than off the road with confiscated bikes :laughing

came up form bakersfield on 5 today and asked a hp if they were patrolling heavy for a reason,he said they were going to start doing max ebforcement on the weekends because the weather was getting nicer and people have been driving more aggressively,

I'm planning on becoming a CHP officer once I graduate from college. I know you can apply when you're 20.5, then enter the academy once you're 21. I'll be 20.5 this December, but I'll still have a year and a half of school left to complete.

In relation to when I graduate (2011), when would be the ideal time to apply?

(FWIW, I did read the sticky )

Nahh, Rel, he said they bounced his app already.

:laughing

OP: As a general rule, especially on the 2-lane each-side stretch of I-5 down by the stockyards, expect enforcement.

It's really not worth it on that road anyway, you've got constant livestock hauling chicanes losing their shit (literally), and doing 50 mph side by side. You're not going to go much faster than the posted 70 down there, and you'll be lucky to maintain that.
