Two Bay Area teens in two weeks reportedly die attempting 'BART surfing'
Two males were found dead near BART train tracks in the last two weeks, according to police logs, and the San Francisco Standard reported on Tuesday that the deceased are both teenagers who had been riding on the tops of moving trains before falling to their deaths.
Has that been a thing for awhile, or just some new form of idiocy?

Seems like kids are inventing new ways to risk their lives with much worse odds than riding motorcycles. Nothing new, we had our own ways to do it, back in the day, but perhaps less incentive to show it off and take more risks?

"seems like kids are inventing ", like where do you live, under a rock??

they've been doing it for decades.

it's about as old as passenger trains exist, heck some holliwood guy did it in mission impossible 1. When the heck was that?

might've gotten worse with instagram.

and no, they shouldn't do it.

Saw that yesterday.

tiktok surfers making BART surfers catch a high by showing off.

Kind of an espionage ploy to take out future soldiers. :p

I was talking to my wife about people with instagram and tiktok accounts feeling like they need to riskier and riskier things in order to keep their audience coming back.

At some point, it goes beyond if and into the realm of when.

Then there are the people who try to jump from level 1 to level 6 in doing things that require a level of skill to reduce the risk. Plenty of videos out there of people coming up short trying to jump into the water from a high height. In one, the guy landed on the deck of a boat from about 50 foot drop. If he survived, he probably damaged portions of his body. Then there are all those people who wheelie into other vehicles or motorcycles, the part I don't get is why girls go for a ride with some of these guys, I guess some of them will carry the scars from that for the rest of their lives.

Also, can an admin fix the title to 'Bart Surfing'? Thanks!

this is really all it's about. unfortunately the kids don't understand that when you get as far along on the fuck around side of the graph as they are, what you find out is if there is an afterlife or not.

Easy to mock and understandably so to a degree because it’s so damn bad an idea...but come on, as motorcyclists I’m confident many of us did stupid shit as kids. Jumping off rickety ramps, playing with fireworks, actual “battles” with everything from dirt clods to rocks to...allegedly bb/pellet guns.

Dumb? As shit. But also fun taking risks that (thankfully) didn’t result in serious injury or death. Add to that the current social media factor and my reaction was to talk with our boys about measuring risk and trying to remember that there’s a REAL line between adrenaline rush and potential catastrophe.

As a parent of teens I see how. I may no longer understand WHY but still.

"Train surfing" has been a thing for a long time. Most people don't do it, but some people like doing dumb shit for thrills and sometimes they die. The breathless incredulity is a bit much.

Well, it IS incredible that anyone would be so stupid. I feel sorry for their families that their kids' lives were cut short. Some of the blame lies with the social media companies that put up these postings for millions of kids to see and copy.

There's a move afoot in Congress to hold social media companies accountable and legally liable for allowing posts that lead to suicides, bullying, sexual trauma - and stupidity like this.
They claim to be just the passthroughs for millions of postings and they can't monitor them all. Hence, they can't be sued right now for the harm and damage they cause.
But I'll bet if they could be sued for such things they'd find a way.

I'd prefer to keep this thread out of the PF.

I'm sure, as motorcycle riders, we all did risky things. Hell, I sometimes wonder how many of us would be here if there had been modern 600's available back then, there would certainly be fewer of us.

But, the dynamic of risky behavior not only encouraged but monetarily rewarded on social media is something that is like a 'hold my beer' on steroids. No doubt there are plenty of ghouls egging on people to attempt things that are likely to go wrong, I know the type exist out there.

Yeah this won't fly, legally, due to the 1st amendment. All recent state wide "protect the children", "verify age on the internet" etc have been found unconstitutional. Who gets to decide what makes a post "lead to suicides, bullying and sexual trauma?"

Content moderation at scale is impossible.

People that used to holler about personal accountability yesterday are wanting to blame the internet today. It's how they thought about alcohol a hundred years ago, the drink got me!
