and collect 15-20% of the wages from it's followers that catholics/christians do now....????

okay, technically, there was only 11 true disciples while the 12th one started a rock band Judas Priest and have done pretty well for himself...

Where did you get 15-20%? A "tithe" is a tenth... 10%. 10% of pre-tax income.

Jesus was actually standing over the offering plate giving his opinion on people who were giving. The old lady who gave 2 cents gave more (in proportion to her wealth) that the douchebags with their bags of gold.

a local church member keeps bugging me about coming to his church but he said 15% "or so"...didn't know where that was written...

also wanted me to sign up with my bank account so the church can deduct "my donations" so i don't feel embarrassed if i don't offer anything in the collection plate...:rolleyes

Seriously, that is total bullshit! Noone should be expected to tithe. Put a blank piece of paper in the collection plate if you want people to see you put something in there.

There was the best scene in "Repo Man" with the tele-evangelist telling everyone that Jesus wanted him to have thier money, or something like that. And then Otto asks his parents to front him some money out his college fund and they tell him there is no more college fund for him because they donated all the money to send bibles to El Salvador, and all the while, they're sitting on the couch toking on a joint. Absolutely killer. The movie of course is in my all time top 5.

Nowhere, Jesus is a lie.

What?! No ATMs at churches?!

What's wrong with our country!?

Jesus never asked his disciples to ask his followers to tithe. He didn't have to. His early followers were mostly Jews who were already accustomed to tithing, as it was an ancient Hebrew tradition. The first recorded practice was by Abram (later Abraham) to Melchizedek, a high priest, in Genesis 14:18-20, maybe 1800 years before Jesus' birth.

Nowhere, Jesus is a lie.

Would have to agree with that one. The guy that wrote up the blueprints for Christianity was actually Paul (Saul) of Tarsus. In fact many historians say calling Christians by their current name is a misnomer. Calling them Paulines would be more accurate. There was just a report out on religious knowledge. It turns out that the more religious you are, the less you know about the history of your religion! Furthermore, the people that scored highest on that survey were Jews and atheists. Ironic isn't it?

Anyone who pays the church deserves to pay the church.

IIRC the 10% was to pay for the Levites since they were a priestly class and didn't work the fields like everyone else because they were at the temple butchering and sacrificing animals or dealing with judicial matters (sanhedrin) instead. There were multiple contribution boxes at the temple and they each had a different designation/purpose.

Gleaning on the other hand was a form of charity. How much a farmer left over in his fields was at his own discretion.

The whole arrangement went bust because the priests were ripping people off. First by forcing them into a fleeced exchange rate by only accepting one currency in the temple so out-of-town worshippers needed the local currency. Then they sold the worshippers defective animals instead of the pristine best as required by temple law. All at outrageous prices. (If you were travelling from Ethiopia for example you wouldn't take an ox on the journey for sacrifice at the temple you'd simply buy one once you got there.) Further burdening the people the priests also made ridiculous interpretations of the tithe law such as a tenth of teaspoon of an herb.

Jesus called them out and exposed their thievery and I'm sure it was a major reason for them wanting him dead.

I've never heard of attaching to a bank account for EFT purposes. That is truly outrageous. :thumbdown

Oh one more thing, as to the title of your thread the answer is in the last two verses in the book of Matthew.
