Which BARFer is this? (hyw 9 cage vs bike incident)

Yup... just watched on the computer. Brake flicker.

Bad decision.. no gloves.. so I expect bad decisions from sport bike riders who do not wear gloves.. (pet peeve for sure).

This ^^^
I second I see anyone riding without gloves I get away. I can understand no helmet before no gloves.

I remember a dude I rode with once that said gloves impaired his ability to control his bike...I responded, "k dude, go ahead and ride in front of me".

For sure. And if he had simply slowed down in his lane and put his blinker on, everything would have been fine. Hell, he really didn't even need his blinker, all he had to do was NOT pull off onto the freakin' shoulder, baiting the following vehicles into thinking he was letting them by! Next time a car pulls over to the side to "let me by," I'll have to remember to come to a stop in the middle of the road to avoid a collision when they pull a u-turn in front of me. I'm glad for this teaching moment. :rolleyes

I'm sure that is all great consolation to the rider.

Seriously, if you want to survive on highway 9, you need to learn to read drivers better.

I personally will absolutely not pass a car when there is a turnout or road to the left. The vast majority of my near misses have involved misreading the intention of a driver, and an attempt at a left side pass.

Not sure exactly what the eye-roll is for, but I'll bite...

In this incident, he stupidity of the car driver was trumped by the stupidity of the motorcyclist. You can take it to the extreme "stopping in the middle of the road" but that may or may not have been necessary. The rider could have slowed even more, and layed on the horn. That may have helped avoid this. A rider would have to be living in a vacuum to have never heard of a car doing this.

And to state it one more time for those that missed it: The car driver is an idiot. The motorcyclist made a stupid choice.

Very educating video - to learn on other's mistakes

Why fuck the driver? He was making a left turn when a biker tried to pass on the double yellow. If anything I believe the biker is at fault for not seeing the signs of a driver attempting a left turn. It was obvious on the first attempted left turn that he didn't make.

All in all I am glad the rider seems to be ok.

Illegal left/u-turn, no signals, pulls to the right, stops then crosses the left( keep in mind he PUSHED the rider across the DY), yes I say Fuck the driver you got a problem with that? This could have been avoided by the rider, no one doubts that but the driver is still the primary cause.

NO doubt.
Truth.

Don't get too mad about it.. though.. folks throwing out opinions.
The above is a perfect summary that I think 99% of us agree with.

Bottom line is we have to save our own asses from stupid asses a lot.

I counted about 5 times last year for me.

However.. I do wear gloves..:teeth

Looks like the rider was NOT going to cross the double yellow until the car cut him off. Car brakes, slows to a crawl, and pulls onto the RH shoulder while being followed by a group of bikes... yeah, the normal assumption is that he's pulling over to let them by. I know that's the call I'd make, and go for the completely-legal pass while staying in my own lane. The car made an erratic, unsignalled maneuver across the road without verifying that it was clear and safe to do so, the rider tried to avoid it by swinging wide across the DY, but was unsuccessful. I'd hope the car driver is found completely at fault for that. How hard is it to put your fucking blinker on so that the other road users around you can figure out what your intentions are?

Couldn't have said it better. Douchebag driver pulls all the way to the right as if he is going to stop, then turns LEFT. WTF?

Consider this a warning folks. I've had cages do much worse in the twisties. Just assume a deer in rut is driving the cage and plan accordingly.
A quick recap of memorable ones.
Signal right, turn left
9 point U turn on Tunitis creek, in a blind corner, minivan.
Swing right, slow down, flip U turn on 35. No signals.
Etc....

Give those cagers space and plan your passes. I like to ask myself what's the worst thing that car could do? Then plan to avoid it before it develops.

That was me.. Whats the big deal? Has anyone seen my shoe? Kinda weird riding home afterward.. don't worry, the bike is fine.

I know we badger the cager for slowing down and pulling over. But HOW MANY TIMES have you rode and see cagers pulling over and slowing down just to let people pass? Did you slow down also to see what they were doing or did you blast pass them? Most probably will blast pass the cager. So I'm thinking this could have been the mindset of the biker. UNTIL......:wtf

Believe it or not, I pretty much do exactly that.

I REALLY don't trust anyone pulling to the right shoulder, and make DAMN sure they're not planning to pull right back out before making the commitment to go past them. I'll usually even shift to the right along with them, (so any unseen traffic behind me "has an out") until they make a truly drastic gesture of some sort. (hell, I barely trust the people who actually use the turnouts as intended!)

And yes. I've come to a complete stop a few times before pulling out to go around. I figure, if they still pull the moron move at that point, my chances of injury are low since both our speeds are so low. I am fully aware however, that while injury chances are diminished, the chance of collision remains.

i know a lot of people who would attempt the same type of pass, especially on a road like highway 9... the cager was pulling to the right & slowing down- that happens all the time on that stretch of twisty road... it usually means "im a slow cunt; please pass"... especially since the car wasn't signalling- how was the biker supposed to know he was going to make an illegal U-turn?

100 bucks says the driver is over 70 years old... when I see cars like a lincoln, I just assume the driver is going to die of old age in the middle of the freeway... so I proceed with major caution.

At least there was a CHP right there to document the whole thing. :teeth

That was obviously avoidable, but I would have found the car at fault AND issued him/her a citation.

Thing to remember though, it doesn't matter how right you are if you're dead. The rider could have avoided it with a little patience, and I'm sure he will next time.

We've all made that pass though, be honest. We just didnt get hit. No need to hammer on the rider. I'm sure he's learned from his mistake.

there was no blinker and again he didn't pass the DY until just before impact and only in trying to avoid the collision!!

fuck that driver with a 2x4 after it's been roughed up with a cheese grater:nchantr

I would have passed the car much sooner, right after I was out of sight of that Chippy. Car driver was too aratic and I would have went around him much sooner. Also total squid for not wearing gloves.

Then you may have been hit by the According going the other direction. :wtf

Car has left turn blinker on and decreasing speed.

Dirt turn-out/parking area on left side of road.

Signs suggesting not a good moment for a pass.

Looks like a low speed incident. Hope the rider is ok.
