Im thinking of getting a friend a PS3 for his birthday and am unsure as to which model is best. Are they all backwards compatible with the PS2/1 ? What say you barfers?

/sorry Im sure this has been posted before, but there seems to be a lack of search in the sink.

Get him a 360. :x

None of the new PS3's are backward compatable any more. You will have to find one of the old 60 GB versions...

Seriously though get him a 360.

That blows. He really wants a PS3. :| Im not sure why something that reads from a common media cant be made backwards compatible, even if it has to go the MAME route.

isnt the 80gb backward compatible? But not 100% like the 60gb.

Why the hell would you want to play ps2 games anyways? If you want to play ps2 games get a ps2 they can be had for $40

If you already HAVE a stack of PS2 games, it's nice to be able to run them all through the same machine. The 80 gig does run both from what I hear. I'm thinking about getting one just so I have a Blue Ray player. :dunno

The 80 gig will run some put it got rid of the PS2 emulator chipset so it doesn't run as many PS1 and PS2 games as the older systems.

The original 60gig would play ps2 games no problem. The newer 80 gigs would play it through an emulater, which I hear is a bit sketchy in quality.

I was sorta bummed I couldn't play ps2 games on my 40g, then 5 minutes later I didn't care cause there were so many good games out I don't have time to play old games I already beat. I then switched out the hard drive for a 250gig one (which takes 5 minutes to do, easy peasy)

Get a 60 gig and then buy a seperate hard drive since they're hot-swappable.

REALLY? You can hot swap it? That's RAD! I thought it was cool enough you could change hard drives, but if it's hot swappable I am REALLY impressed. Shit, I'm surprised they don't sell them without hard drives as a cheaper option where you can stick in your own.

Well, not hot-swap but you can change it. It's just a standard laptop hard drive. Sorry, I worded it wrong. My neighbor bought a PS3 just for Blu Ray and I go over to play Metal Gear 4 from time to time.

You can buy my 60gb from me. I don't even play the ps2 games anymore. I have a pretty good collection of ps3 games ... and 360 games... and a wii....

lol

I still have the original box and packaging! :teeth

Damn it, I was all excited. :( Ima still get one for Blu Ray and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2.

Its not that hard to switch the hard drive Eldritch.

But like Darth said it doesn't play all of the old games but most. I love the graphics. COD is really intense on it. Its better then the 360 but the 360 is what I use most. The ps3 is used for blue ray and a few games. I love that its a gamer and a blue ray.

If your friend already has a p2 that he plays his old games on he will love the 3 just for the graphics on the new one. What a nice friend. You rock.

Oh, sure I can swap HD in a laptop, it's just a bummer it's not hot swappable.

How much $$$?

As this was a spur of the moment comment, how about $300? I just looked at completed listings on ebay for the 60gb ps3 and they are anywhere between $300 and $400.

I will include the second wireless controller that I have.
