why and when did auto industry start pushing these primer colors

2016 Toyota TRD Pro color was quicksand. In 2017 it was cement. Other OEMs took that cue and it has since spread.

Matte paints looks great on some vehicles more than others. My bike has it and I think it looks tits.

I’ve seen new motorcycles with that primer grey. Nothing wrong with more colour options. As long as it’s not yellow.

Not a fan in general, but some cars pull it off quite nicely.

I read an article that talked about how automotive colors reflect the attitude of the public. When we feel optimistic we buy bright colored vehicles. When times are tough we buy muted colors. The link between economic outlook and what sold color wise in vehicles was interesting.

FWIW, I agree that grey looks like primer and I doubt I would buy a grey vehicle.

5 of my current rides (2 landcruisers, 3 bikes) are flat primer.
I flat blacked my nearly new 95 cbr600f3 when I got it in 96 to get rid of the awful 90s neon.

I support this trend, but also like the retro bright colors of late 60s/early 70s muscle cars coming back. Bright greens, oranges, purples, etc. On the right body for sure.

Enough white, silver and grey cars out there.
(Lol I also have white and grey trucks)

Diversity is good. Metallics and pearls got overdone for a while, they work on some bodys, not others.

Also, they were new and cool when first released, now there are tons out there so it's getting a bit overdone.
(Like overland kitted sprinters and tacos here in the Sierra)

I think the whole matte paint thing (which is an absolute son of a bitch to take care of btw) really got popular when Harley started with “Black Denim” which is probably around 15 years ago.

...

Ducati Monster 750 Dark premiered in 1997(?).

The white and black farmhouse look is also a thing. When did that start? Friend credits Magnolia woman.

Amusing thread. BARF delivers.
Makes a rattle can paint job ok?

I had a beige Corolla once. I didn't care for the color but the price was right and boring colors usually mean you don't have to wash it as often as other colors.

My black Supra was the best car I've ever owned but I had to wash it at least once a week. Dirty black cars look really bad really quick.

clean black cars get dirty right after they're washed.

Rule #1: Black is always the right color choice, for anything.

Rule #2: Quality rattlecan jobs are fully acceptable, for anything.

Rule #3: combine rule #1 and #2 whenever possible.

Rule #4: no, YOU'RE wrong.

My roommate bought a new car last year. Black VW GTI. When he brought it home, he asked what I thought. I laughed and said, have fun with that. :laughing

As the owner of 4 black vehicles I applaud you :applause... and do a lot of car washing. :laughing

This has been a good thread.

The last time I drove a black car was a rental. On the 2nd day, looking at it made me feel like listening to nails on a chalk board.

What kind of broke Americans are buying $40K vehicles with $5K markups? :laughing

For whatever reason matte colors on motos don't bother me.

I've even put black matte vinyl and had a black matte shoei before.

It is just the Bondo/grey primer look on new cars, I've known ppl and have had project cars/trucks be around me all my life. They just remind me of the big step - it's finally ready for primer!
