So can anyone offer insight into why anime is so popular here in the US? I've forced myself to watch it many a times and I just can't seem to find the appeal.

The dialog is almost always over-the-top/cheesy. The characters are often stereotypical archetypes whom rarely act like normal (or even heroic) people. And does every girl need to have wide eyes, small mouth, and a short skirt on?

The biggest thing for me though is there is almost always no subtly in anything. If feels like I'm always being beat over the head with plot/dialog/ridiculousness.

This isn't to say there isn't a lot of cool stuff that goes into anime. The art and imagination that goes into a lot of the series is often amazing. There are even a few series that I really got into (Cowboy Bebop, FLCL, to a less extent Ghost in the Shell). I'm left scratching my head at 90% of the series though.

I'm not trying to be an ass and attack peoples tastes. Just trying to figure out what's going on in peoples heads :nerd

You're not watching the good stuff (at least the good stuff for you). Then again, I've been watching anime since Astro Boy (OMFG the Movie comes out this summer!) There is a lot of crap, just like any other type of media/art. There are so many different genres that if one type doesn't work for you there are plenty of others to choose from. Then there are the various art forms that have progressed through the different decades. Also you have story lines that range from sap, Bubble Gum Crisis, to harsh, Death Note. Now it seems that anime has become a fashion for a lot of people who watch it because they think everyone else is watching and they want to not seem uncool, but in reality watching anime is about a geeked and uncool as you can get. Nerdvision at a high level. Also, try watching it with the original Japanese language and english subtitles. The voice acting for a lot of anime in the US is done by some people in Texas who haven't changed their range of emotion for the last 2 decades. But if you don't get it, then don't force yourself to watch it. My netflix queque has an anime every third title, and I would actually switch between anime and J or K horror as the only movies in my queue if it wasn't for the wife. I just like that shite right now. Again, if you don't like it, don't force yourself to watch it. Here are a few primers to check out....
Movies: Ninja Scroll, Appleseed, Howls Moving Castle...
Series: Hellsing, Kino's Journey, Samuri Champloo....

Wash got killed by a stick. . . that is all :| :twofinger

Maybe I'm just weird ( No shit, really?! ) but I've been digging these series lately, Trinity Blood, Gunslinger Girl, GTO and Hellsing Ultimate.

Just find what you like and watch it, who cares what other people think of what you do when it comes to lounging in front of the TV. :laughing Just make sure you watch it in its original language with subtitles, otherwise you're doing it wrong.

it's not that we love all anime, it's that certain animes speak to us.
anime is just a medium, like film or stage. It's just away to convey a story.
The thing anime has is an ability to convey any storey, because it's a drawing your disbelief is suspended, it allows you to be more fanciful.
The best example of anime is Hayao Miyazaki: check out "Spirited Away" or "Mononoke Hime". Miyazaki shows you just what he wants you to see; no actor, cinematographer, director, nor anyone else to interperet the script.

To a certain extent anime is the perfect dream world, when anything can come to life.

Hahaha..I was just about to say..
