Why do people think it's okay to use the word faggot?

Good posts :thumbup The reason I brought the question up was because I witnessed an altercation where one guy called the other guy a faggot (I think he was) and shit hit the fan. No, said person was not me! :twofinger I've never been around any type of hate crime type shit, but that was some verbal drama :wow Obviously the receiver was not a happy camper being called one.

Any guy that would call some other guy "faggot" in an altercation 100 % has issues with their own sexuality. It's straight out of Boogie Nights, why not just ask the guy to pull out his meat and then kick his ass and call him a "faggot" :rolleyes

If a guy ever called me a faggot I'd probably just feel sorry for him and avoid getting into a fight with him 'cause it would only provide him with sexual gratification to feel the touch of another man.

I agree. Who calls someone a 'faggot' instead of 'a mother fucking cocksucker' in a confrontation? The former is totally flaming.

The BEST word in the english language is Faggot. If that was taken away, I'd move to Chad.

Berto doesn't roll of the tounge as well...unless you're pissed at your drug importer...

Why do you think that is? Originally, gay meant happy, and faggot referred to sticks. Now it's an insult, and is taken to mean "flawed, misguided, stupid or wrong" only because they came to be tied to homosexuality, which in some (many) minds is a negative thing.

Who can use the language? It's a tough call. I call myself, and sometimes friends, "dykes," but I mean that to refer to both a political and sexual identity that has worked for reclamation of the term, and rejection of the medicalized "homosexuality." However, layperson on the street would probably get punched for it. :twofinger

If you're not a member of a disenfranchised group (racial, sexual, religious), it's tough if not impossible to understand what daily life is for those who are. Including what it means to be called one of those terms. As such, do you really consider yourself informed or entitled enough to throw it around?

That being said, particular environments, BARF included, have their own social norms: the leg-humping, the term "azn," and fggtry (especially if machete is involved in the thread :twofinger ).a

It is pretty simple. Somewhere along the way, "gay" came to mean, "homosexual", which is of course, how language evolves. However, since being homosexual is generally perceived in our society as being "bad", substituting "gay" for some other possible negative adjective is reinforcing the concept.

People can say, "This is so gay" or "That is so gay" all they want. But, those who do and claim that it has nothing to do with defining homosexuality as something negative or something to be ridiculed, are either a hypocrite or just stupid.

The fact that the use of the term as a pejorative is ubiquitous does not unbind it from its intended meaning. In fact, this makes it even more pernicious. Because its use is so pervasive, most people do not even think about its meaning.

My first sentence/question was rhetorical. You somewhat just paraphrased the first paragraph. :laughing

But nicely put!

:p

Good point, and I'd like to take this moment to point out to anyone who may be homophobic (but has read this far):
Just because you find a guy attractive doesn't mean that he is gay.
