As apart of the racing element of keeping a defensive line during a race, my question is why the racers are equipped with a bike with a known missing tool.

yes im referring to mirrors. Your bike has them. My bike has them. Mirrors allow you as a rider to keep your enviroment controlled. With mirros you are able to remain aware and alert of whats going on behind you. Its more like evolution. Think about it.

Mirrors are a way of utilizing whats going on in your "space" to make any specific rider more competitive. If you are able to utilize control and have excellent management of whats going on ahead of you why is there no "exceeding the max" of a riders abilities by allowing the element of mirrors.

Not to drag in an old argument - but to make a small but effective point - i feel like the addition of traction control brewed a storm of controversy over whether or not the fans and racers believed that it took away from the sport.

So yes...why dont they have mirrors

enlighten me :p

Aerodynamics? or maybe so they can concentrate on looking forward and planning their line...

with mirrors, you'll be tempted to look around you and that'll make you lose focus

im just guessing :2cents

...because if they added mirrors Rossi would have his crew put a reverse gear in the tranny and would hand everyone their ass while riding backwards.:twofinger

at 170 MPH, a glace in the mirrors could take 500ft to physically move your head, process information and refocus on the road ahead. It is the persons behind to make the safe pass (or in rossi's case) dive across the dirt in the corkscrew to make the pass. At the track i personally don't want to see the guy riding up my tail pipe. Usually the person passing is ahead of you before you have time to react to his present.

Because MotoGP Bikes come stock with Radar. It transmits the signal to the helmet and shows up on the inside of the rider's shield but we can't see it from the outside. All MotoGP bikes have been using this since 2015...wait, what year is it again? Frickin' time machine!

Because if you think about the different riding positions a rider uses during a race: tucked in, sitting up on the brakes, hanging off to the inside... There really is no way to mount a mirror to a bike so that it'd be useful in every position. Mayhaps a helmet mounted system would be helpful, but I'm not sure how the rules are in GP, except that I know there are no electronic signaling devices allowed between the pit crew and the rider.

Why would racers be looking at what's going on behind them?

Their job is to go forwards as fast as they can.

Your job on the street is go to from A to B safely, so it's not the same thing.

mirrors would probably cost 30hp on the straights. Seriously

honestly the only time I even use my mirrors in street riding is when I'm stopped at a light. I always have an eye on it to make sure some idiot isn't flying towards me. apart from that, I always turn my head and look.

i saw stoner totally turned his head and torso backwards at indy today looking at who's going to pass him next :rofl

ok and when they sit up and TURN AROUND AT SPEED to "check six", how many feet is that? I see COUNTLESS riders turning around to check behind them DURING A RACE, so I have also wondered why not at least a spot mirror on the bar end or someplace aerodynamic?

For the same reasons that chickens don't have lips.

Because chrome doesn't shine up enough to use as a mirror and glass is not permitted on the Motorcycle race track.

The main reason race bikes (not just MotoGP bikes) don't have mirrors is because there's no need. Because of the different positions a rider can be on the bike, it takes the same amount of mental focus to turn your head as it does to figure out what part of the track you're looking at given the bike lean and your head position at that moment while looking into a mirror. Race cars tend to have mirrors because the driver can't turn his or her head much to look around, in part because the race car obscures much of the view, and in part due to the safety restraints (particularly modern HANS devices).
