Why I Think Helmet Laws Are Stupid

234,094 injuries in and around the bathtub; do we ban showers or demand folks who shower wear safety gear?

Actually there are a lot of restrictions on what you can and can't do laying out kitchens, bathrooms and other wet spaces under the California Building Code, occupational health and safety, the Americans with Disabilities Act, OSHPD, etc, often with good reason, much of it to prevent slip and fall injuries which are costly to individuals, property owners, insurers and to social safety nets which (sometimes) pick up the slack.

Some folks pure, unadulterated libertarianism goes out the window when they get hurt and need to get everything put back together again.

Not sure if sarcastic...
Dead serious! Nanny state is killing us! And then, I can only see a doctor with a valid license to practice medicine. Next thing they're gonna make me fly in commercial airplanes with only licensed pilots. It's the end!

It should be up to the rider like in texas over 25 if u dont want to wear it dont
Itd required in ca cause in the 70's they wer gonna loose fed funding for the chp so they needed a bullshit reason to keep it and as usual they screw the gen public
Dot dont mean shit they dont inspect helmets it is up to the mfg of the helmet to say yes it is or no its not. Unless it has snell on it they do inspect certain buckets
All my wrecks have in large part been caused by the helmet blocking my view left n right

1/2 helmets r better but provide almost no protection
If u land on the top of ur head ur gonna snap u neck so oh well
I prefer no helmet period i ride better cause im more alert to whats going on around me not in a false security helmets give

Y u think most soldiers dont keep their cover provides no real protection just a boost in confidence

Just how i feel got 20 years on bikes and prefer no brain bucket

1. What helmets are you wearing and damn your situational awareness must suck. My Qwest blocks almost none of my FoV in fact I wish the view port was a little shorter because the sun is always finding it's way into my eyes.
2. Full Face helmets do not increase the chase of cervical spine injuries. Sorry, it doesn't work that way.
3. False sense of security? My helmet isn't there so I can ram my head into a a semi 70mph. It's there when my head makes contact with the pavement even at sub-5mph speeds I don't have to go to hospital. Then again you appear to not have much up there worth protecting.
:thumbup

after landing on my head from dirtbikes and snowboarding plenty of times, i realize my neck is not as fragile as action movies make them out to be.

the "i dont need a helmet, my neck will just break anyway" argument is a fallacy.

You see, there's no law prohibiting you from earning 5 PhD's, but there's a law prohibiting you from locking a child in a hot car. You know why, don't you?

if you can show me something logical out of that as an analogy to the helmet law debate i will be astounded.

The problem with your logic is you might not die. You could suffer a catastrophic brain injury, turn into a chef salad and stay that way for the next 45 years.

Who the fuck is supposed to pay for that?

Who is to say that anyone should pay for it?

I've personally requested to be euthanized should a crash results in leaving me in vegetative state or if I am brain dead. Hell if I'm not physically and/or intellectually contributing to society, what's the point of living?
Why would you keep a loved one alive to suffer a horrific quality of life?

Looking back on the one crash I've had, if I weren't wearing a full face helmet, a car would've been wearing my full face without me attached.

Well there's so many shades of gray in brain injury. Vegetative state doesn't really describe a lot of profoundly damaged and dependent individuals. Tough to pull the plug on someone who can be sustained with a feeding tube and basic care, who may be able to interact in some way. No plug to pull really but that life isn't desirable either to me.

I believe you are being genuinely altruistic, but I still disagree on the larger issue of personal choice. It seems that people often try to force their beliefs or ways on other people, thinking that the other person is too ignorant or too stupid to know better. I will turn this slightly political and say that "liberals" tend to do this a lot.

I'll admit it. On most social issues I'm a radical leftist/liberal. [most, exceptions for the right to bear arms and I also think western secular culture is far superior to most other alternatives]
I've been selling motorcycle gear for a job for 12years now.
Yes most new riders are too ignorant to know better, yes I believe society should have laws that would help keep safe the people that chose high risk activities.
I understand the slipery slope argument of the libertarian. But I believe the answer is in the middle not at the extremes.

I really couldn't care less about "big brother" or intrusive governmental interference or helmet impact location studies...

If there was no helmet law I would still wear a full face helmet and full leathers everytime I rode, even if it was 110 degrees in the shade. For me it feels wrong not to, and I won't tell anyone else what to wear, and if someone crashes in shorts and flip flops I won't think anything but, "I hope he's ok"

I consider myself fortunate in that I like wearing full protective gear, and I know in an accident, it gives me more proof against injury and rash, but riding a bike in ANY PROTECTIVE GEAR in the midst of cars is ridiculously dangerous anyway. Do what suits you, think about the people who might have to care for you after something happens, and simply be careful. Over and out.

Well more people die from smoking, drinking or get killed in accidents with legal guns are we gonna ban all of it. If someona doesn't wear helmet I consider that as a choice stupid but still it's freedom of choice.

Many motorcyclists die wearing high quality full-face helmets. It's about caring for your brother. Rhetorical question: if your first-born child turned 17, got a motorbike and told you "I'm going to ride without a helmet, dad", you wouldn't say, "go ahead, daughter, if you die it's your own fault", would you? Of course not.

To me it is a matter of freedom.

You are either free to do what you want or you are not.

Freedom: people talk it up but actually hate it.

I understand what are you saying but your question is of personal nature but laws are not. Im just saying if laws are there for protection of people than it should be same for everyone. Dont get me wrong I am for helmet laws just if people can smoke them selfs to death why wouldnt be option for helmets and seatbelts. No one thinks they will crash and die same with guns no one thinks that gun will fire in their best friend but shit happens, or that someone will get cancer from smoking. We all think thats not gonna happen to us.
